The issues that Ben mentioned are a "mixed blessing." If my motor was done and we had dropped it in already, I would have had to run the headers uncoated. This made me a little nervous due to proximity to coils, hoses (radiator and heater), and shifter cables. Now I will have time to get them coated by JetHot before installation. That will cut down on heat exchange to nearby components, and should help with performance slightly.

Once we have my Sunbird back together and tuned with the headers on, we plan to get our first "production set" done. We have already learned some useful "lessons" that we will incorporate in those future sets.

I will have to let Ben take a look at my headers when we do tuning. If he likes what he sees and wants to offer them thru the 60degreeStore that would be fine by me. Remember, these will be designed initially for a J-Body with a Gen II/5-speed for sure, and probably for a Gen III/5-speed as well (the only real change would be the flanges, I believe). We may need a deposit of some type to help offset cost of some of the components up front, but we want to turn them around as fast as we can. I can realistically see us being ready to "production sets" by October (maybe sooner if things fall into place). This won't help folks this race season, but it will provide for a winter project so they will be ready next year!

I will post more pictures of the finished prototype set off the car and installed once they are in.
round port gen2 flanges will fit a gen3 as well.. all the bolts are in the same location and if the flange port size is 1 5/8" they shouldn't overlap the D shape on the heads at all. The flanges i bought from "Betterthanyou" fit perfect.

how do betterthanyou's flanges line up on your 3500 heads dave? i know they'll work good on a 3100/3400 d-port, but i may do a 3500 top end swap, and need to know how they clear. (since i cant find flanges anywhere else, without making them). im looking to use 1.5" primary tube

      thanks

the 3500 ports are offset very slightly from the 3400 ports but his flanges fit perfect.

            Thanks for the flange update

Hey Superdave, thanks for the update on betterthanyou's flanges fitting both Gen II and Gen III. This will simplify things quite a bit, and will make the headers useful for more applications. We may eventually offer them for automatics too, if we can see how they fit with that different transaxle. It might just need a modified crossover. His flanges are very nice, and he charges a fair price for them. I will have to contact him before long to get a few more sets.

rsisbetter, I found that getting tubes smaller than 2" was a pain. I am using 1 5/8" primaries (which I found a U-Bend supplier for), into a 2" crossover, into 2 1/2" exhaust. If you can get flanges that small (which doesn't allow for much exhaust port porting), and primaries pipes that small, then more power to you!

If there is an issue with the flanges and the 3500 heads, let me know and I can update the CAD drawing for 3500 heads. I did the design that Geoff (betterthanyou) is currently using, so it won't be hard at all to update the drawing. And I know Ben has a set of 3500 heads, so he can get me any dimensions I need.

Looking forward to the final product...

Darn, i should have had you send me your flange so I could try it out. I still need one to make my flowbench exhaust tube setup anyway.

I don't have any of the flanges anymore. I had one of the original sets, but sold them awhile back to someone who needed them ASAP. Never got another set from Geoff, as I didn't plan on building headers any time soon. I can send you a PDF of the drawing if you want to print it out and lay it over a 3500 head.

i could post a picture but my heads are ported so it won't help much.

there wasn't any overlap though, i'm using those flanges and 3400 gaskets.

He goes by the screen name "betterthanyou" on here. He has a nice product and was easy to deal with. I think he is out of Canada, IIRC.
