  • Z34 Alternator

I have read how to remove the alternator, but still curious about some bolt sizes. I need to get the Axle nut off and I bought a 36mm Socket but fits kinda sloppy. Is this the right size for that nut ? Does anyone know the correct size ?
I know I really don't have to take that nut off, but i want to repack the bearing and make sure everything is ok. Is there a special technique to removing the axle nut, this one seems pretty tight.
Any suggestions to making this project go alot smoother, please let me know.

    Thanx in advance

    Ciao

You can not repack the bearing becasue it is a sealed hub which is not ment to be taken apart. Basically all you will be able to do is look at the hole in the hub where the CV goes through it. To remove the nut you either need an impact gun or a large breaker bar and a pipe.

I don't even take the axle nut off to do the alt. Remove the 4 15mm bolts holding the hub in from BEHIND and the axle will come out as one peice with the hub.

Yeah, I have, a couple times. An impact is nice, but a 1/2" ratchet and extention bar (like a pipe) can work with some effort too.

                Stuck Now.. HELP !!!

Ok I have removed almost everything. I have the axle out, but the hub part is still connected to the tranny, the part that is right underneath the alternator. Does that hub part come off ? Or am I missing something here. I took the axle out from where the joint is, the part that has the three bearing on.
If that part comes off, is there an easy way to remove it without wrecking it ?
                I'm stuck now
                Can someone help again.

                Thanx

The joint should have come out as one peice without you taking the joint apart. The part that the three bearings goes into does come out. Put a heavy flat head screw driver, pry bar, or I even have used a ball joint seperator (or pickle fork as some people call them) behind it, and pry while pulling on it at the same time. Be carefull though, and try not to screw up the seal in there or you will have to spend $10-15 on a new one. Sometimes the c clip that is the part the holds the shaft in there does get stuck and ends up being a PITA once in a while, as you have found out.

                    Thanx

Thank You very much for clearing that up for me Pocket.
When it gets a little bit warmer I will attempt to remove it, it seemed to be a little bit stuck when I tried the first time. Knowing it does come out should be pretty easy now.

                    Thanx again pocket.
                    Brrrr its cold out there

For the 5-speeds you dont need to remove the axle, but it helps tremendously. Otherwise a prybar is a better tool than a socket. As for the impact gun, it is a good tool to have, but not really put to use for the alt as it is in a confined space. I have a couple pics on my 92 Z34 page of my WWW tab.

                        Thanx Again

                        Hey Aaron,
See the hub for the axle, the part that the alternator is resting on, Pocket said that part comes out. I have the shaft out except for that part. I know pocket told me that it comes out and thats the only thing in the way right now, beside the tie rod ball joint. Also if it wasn't for the air conditioning coollent lines it would have been out by now.. Fucked up place to run those lines.. Geez

                        Thanx for the pic Aaron

                        Anymore info would be appreciated.

                        Thanx Again

                          Website

                          Hey Aaron,
                          What was your website again.
After I'm finished doing this job, maybe I will write down in detail on what is needed and how to go about doing this procedure. Not just for everyone else, but for myself as well.. LOL
I know I will forget, and think its not a big deal next time.. LOL

Click on the www tab at the bottom of his post. That will take you to his site. I do remember one of the axles stuck in the auto in the 91 didn't come out on the tranny side, so we left that part of it in the tranny that isn't coming out of yours. The auto wasn't going back in, and I got new axles for the 5 speed that was going in, so I didn't care about the old auto axles.

                              Thanx All

Thanx for all your posts, you guys are great for all the advice.
Well I did finally get that axle hub out and plop, the alternator fell right out.
I finally got the new alternator in with the help of alot of cursing..

Anyway its all in and i just ran into a prob with a coolant leak.
Its the pipe that runs underneath then back up again to the heater core. The pipe that goes underneath thats right in the way of pulling out the alternator sprung a little leak.

Is it difficult to take that out ?
Or is there going to be some more cursing..

Car sure runs alot better with the new alternator in.. Yippy

Let me know about that pipe..
                              Thanx

                              Later Guys
