I'm just wondering what are some simple mods i can do to increase Horsepower in my 3100 SFI V6. i know the turbonator and turbonator related products are one big scam but what are some other methods to increase horsepower? I already have a K&N filter that i will be putting in but what are some other simple mods that can be done to the 3100 to give it alittle more power

Just a thought,,, you might want to think twice about the K&N filter. K&Ns are oiled filters and I can tell you for sure that the MAF will NOT like it... I ran the K&N for about 2 years (with proper cleaning and care) and the car slowly lost power, so slowly I didn't really notice. I had read about the oil fouling the MAF but, never tried to do anything with it. Very recently I bought some MAF cleaner and cleaned the MAF.... What a difference!!! Untill the MAF started to get fouled again, rather quickly... Right now I've switched back to a stock paper filter and couldn't be happier!!! If your 01 is setup like my 99 (3100) the MAF is directly after the filter, very close..
The store, WOT-TECH, at the top of the page has a good selection of performance parts...
There really isn't much for "simple" mods but, it really isn't too hard to get a bit more with porting and polishing of the heads/intakes, cold air intake, cam, throttle body, headers,,, with proper tuning.... It DOES take $$$$$!!!
Hopefully this helps,,,

Just because you think the filter caused your problem doesnt mean you should be pushing your opinion on other people like its a fact.

i have a K&N on my truck and my grand am, both have MAF's and neither have any problems.
If you over-oil the filter i can see the MAF screen getting scummy but that's an easy fix.. $4 can of MAF cleaner.

Cold air intake and better exhaust (including the downpipe). Depending on the year, a programmed PCM or a programmer (like HPTuners).-Brad-

First mods to do are 180tstat, underdrive crank & alt pullies, PCM, plugs, wires, cold air intake.
Next level would be ported upper/lower intake manifolds with a larger TB. And or S&S headers. Headers are very nice to have and they look great in the engine bay. I'm not sure how restrictive your catback exhaust so i'd would look into that.
Bolt on wet Zex nitrous kit. Kit # 82021. I have this kit and its very nice. 55-75 shot.
Underdrive pullies are at www.mrzperformance.com. I've bought from MRZ and recommend them.
Ported manifolds,tb,cam, heads, headers plus much more are available at www.wot-tech.com. I've bought just about everything from that store. 10 out of 10 in quality of products and customer service. They have the best proven performance parts for your 3100 engine.
Nitrous kit, intake, PCM plus much more available at www.mpracing.org. I've bought from mpracing too, also a great company.

thanks for the suggestions guys. I plan on doing these mods slowly and gradually also I share the car with my folks (since there trucks are not as fuel efficient) and as such I have to be fair and not mod it up too much to the point where either of them won't drive it. Hopefully I'll be putting in the K&N filter at 104,000 miles (my dad likes to pinch pennies and is a FRAM loyalist) but he'll see in the long run that it's a better long term value than the disposable FRAM filters that he's been buying.

why doesnt anyone say nitrous...its cheap HP. but also some good cheap mods are like everyone else said. just normal maintenance will help return a poorly running vehicle to better shape. plugs/wires/fuel filter/air filer(cold air intake)/O2 sensors/injector cleaning....or you could just find a 3400 and drop that in. easy horsepower gain. everything would fit, same engine, just larger bore for more HP to start out with

Nitrous is bad!!!! LOL... Actually if you ask a lot of people... It's "Cheating" thats why its not recommended as much. BUT if you look at a large crowd of bracket racers these days, a majority of them are using nitrous.

most people that wanna go fast for a low price will get it...most of the F bodies around here and the mustangs run it either in stock form or on a fully modded car...its cheap insurance that you will have a better edge in winning the race
plus, when used in either moderation or with a good tune or a wet system, it can be very reliable. it isnt cheating if you are both using the juice, and really it isnt cheating at all, because its not like you hand built the other guys car to know what it will do or what it has...and neither did he. if he wants a race all engine no bottle, he should have to specify. otherwise, spray your troubles away

nobody mentions nitrous because it's hceap initially but over time it can become the most exspensive mod you have. think about it - you have to always refill your bottle..... if you saved up all the money you used to fill the bottle over time then you could build a turbo kit and have that extra power on demand, always, not having to keep paying to have it there...... at least that's my view on it
i'd say for simple-er mods, headers, full exhaust, ported manifolds and heads, 3500 upper and 65mm TB. Maybe 1.7:1 rocker arms when they release them here
