  • MSD Coils

I've got some strange issues with my MSD coils.. the 1/4 coil was only putting spark to the 1 post the other day.. today the 6/3 coil did the same thing.

when i pulled a plug wire off the 2/5 coil the arc jumped from the top post all the way to the screw holding the coil down.. LOL

Right now i'm running all stock coils with no problems.. but wtf?? lol

There a little "nubs" on the ICM that mate with matching holes on the bottom of each coil. Are you sure that each coil was properly aligned before bolting each one down?

you mean the metal contacts? It is possible that they were making poor contact inside the coil, i could fix that by bending them a little.

they worked fine at one point, the 3/6 one had dropped 3 a while back but it was fine after i switched it to the 1/4.. then that coil did it again.

I thought about it possibly being the ICM since they are known to crap out with MSD coils on them but it's heat-sinc'd pretty well. It's working perfectly with the stock coils.

They are? I have MSD coils, and an intermittent missing problem that seems to be getting worse. I have a spare set or three of ICM and Coils. I'll try that out.

My buddy had bad problems with MSD coils as well as the DIS 4 Box. I don't think MSD builds that great of a product anymore.

Yah, i guess the MSD coils put a larger draw on the ICM and can cause issues. P/N 8224 is also used on the thirdgen Fbodies, i haven't asked over there if they've had issues as well.

the other reason i dont like msd's coil line-up is because when you search for them on say summit, they giveyou 3-4 different ones, with different ratings. i guess i what im saying is i just dont trust what they're telling me is all. seems fishy. all msd stuff imo.

Nah, not the contacts. I'm talking about the little plastic dowel like "nubs" on the ICM. If it's not aligned right before you bolt the coil down, you can pierce the coil enclosure and cause an intermittent short. I'm basing this off of the ICM in my GA. It maybe different in your case.

Wow this is worrying me about MSD, I have always love MSD, but lately have been hearing about problems with their products. So what coil setup/part number are you using Superdave? I have thought about either buying a vehicle specific coil pack for my car or doing a LS7 coil pack setup. Always wanted to do that.

the 8224's.. same P/N for alot of GM cars..

my module fried today after a few miles of running the stock coils, snagged a new module and coils from a GAGT at the yard for $35 and it's running like a dream.

the 3 MSD coils all test good, maybe i'll just put them on ebay or something.. lol

Here's another complaint about msd I bought a brand new in the package msd coil for a 94 chevy tbi and only lasted about 3 months and went bad. But I've always heard good about msd.

You guys that have/had problems, did you use a ballast resistor?

I run Mallory coil, ignition box and distributor. The instructions say to use a ballast resistor or you can "fry" the coil.
