  • 3500 Head Hotness

Just got my heads back. surface and 3 angle valve job, I'll let the pics do the talking. Nothing special just the valve job, no polishing or what not because they will already outflow the 3400's so its already a step in the right direction.

Now I just gotta gasket match them and finish buffing the ends, and paint the faces... then they will be DONE!

Oh and install the springs and what not.

    Got Lope?

purdy, sure could use a cleanup though, just to get rid of the casting flaws but like you said they already flow damm well.

I would sand the ports and polish the combustion chambers and relieve all the edges. Doing this helps reduce hot spots and in turn prevent detonation. Its easy and free so no one can say it isn't worth it.

I'd sand the ports, it only takes about 30 min per port.

        Heads look damn nice tho!

ports will get light sanding and also gasket match, I will not polish them.

As far as polish the combustion chambers I don't know if I'll go that far. Its not like I'm looking to boost the hell out of this thing.

no but if your able to tune, you will be able to run more timing and without detonation and in turn that will yeild more power. its deffinity worth it.

And you can run cheep gas and make the most power with it and not worry about knock retard.

We'll see how things go, I would have to learn how to do it first...

                    I'm not retarded

Well I used a wire wheel on the dremel and then a felt tip and some polishing compound, Now I will say right now I am not comfortable enough with myself to take a sanding bit or stone bit to the chambers so this is about as good as its going to get... You can feel the difference in the surface just by rubbing a rag over it and it doesnt grab on the edges of the chamber anymore.

                    So....
                    pics.
                    What I started with

                    So far what I have

                    Polished up the valves too.

                    what do you think?

It didnt take that long either.

just a note for when cleaning up the combustion chamber you might want to throw some old valves in to protect the seats and the nice valve grind you have
                      got zap-straps?

                          Last and final work.

Cleaned up the valves and then assembeled one head after doing a quick gasket match on it. I'm going for function over form on the gasket match, I only removed material that overlapped the gasket area blended it into the port, nothing fancy I don't have the right tools to port and polish the whole port.

Valve seals needed for LS6 valve springs

I'll have to remember those seats since i gotta pull my LS6 springs off and sell them. For the seals i used '91 2.2 exhaust seals. They work perfect.

what's the thickness on the seats?, they look to be around .030" or so...

didn't measure them yet, I'll check them later, I'm also going to remeasure spring height to be sure its 1.8 so i'm getting the right spring seat pressure.

I didnt think the 2.2 seals worked for the 03+ heads but maybe I miss read it somewhere.

either way these work great, and they press on nicely so I'm not worried at all about them coming off.
