It's been pushed out of the garage for the winter and is going under a tarp, it's fate is yet to be determined.. I'm starting a "big block" swap on the family go kart right now.. Mild Honda GX390 (should be ~20 HP when i'm done) taking the place of a dead 5 Hp Briggs. Hello burnouts

I'm entertaining the idea of going project car-less for a while to save up for something i've always wanted. I've got a good chance to find that something next year if i can save up enough. That means the Camaro will go up for sale as a roller, ITB's will be sold and quite a few other misc things. I probably won't have the heart to part out my 3500 though, it'll get saved for something extra special down the road.

We'll see.. got all winter to make that call.

    • Well, 5 months later we took the tarp off and pushed it back into the garage. It's nice and dirty... lol

I tossed the battery back in, loaded a good bin file to the Ostrich and it fired up first try.

This morning I spent about 5 hours on the road to go pick up a new rear end from a TGO member. It's a disk brake rear, looks to have upgraded axles and an Eaton diff (still waiting on a posiitive ID). 4.10 Richmond gears.

I hope to have it installed this week, still debating on some LCA relocation brackets but we'll see..

I predict sweet burnouts and hopefully better 60' times this year.

nice my little mini bike has a gx140 on it. welded on a mountain bike front end over the winter which added brakes and got a new carb. hooked up one of my old speedometers on it and this week i shall find how fast it goes.

does pretty good brake stands for the motor. was thinking of picking a spare head and shave it a little bit. don't know if there are any stroker kits for the engine but that would be cool

          • I did a 150' straight line run with the kart and the GPS app said 31.9 MPH.. it was still climbing. I had the stock muffler on it and just a filter kit.

Just put the ported head on and i might put the header back on it but i need to re-jet the carb bad. It was running really lean.

I've been trying to get some HD videos but keep having problems with my Contour HD. It acts like it's recording but i get nothing. Only have problems when it's in the waterproof case.

            • damn not bad for speed. don't have anything done to my motor except for the new carb. made a custom exhaust for it since what the guy made before i got it had flames shooting out right under where you sit on deceleration. the new carb woke this thing up.

haven't played around with the carb but past half choke open it bogs. that's when the engine is warm. but it's still producing more power than with the old carb. probably clogged and varnished.

haven't played with different sprockets for the rear yet. gotta count the one that's on there and see where i stand with the number of teeth.

gotta get some new vids of mine. i'll get some pics and possibly a video this weekend. been meaning to create a thread here. it kinda turned into a rat rod mini bike.

              • Spent the afternoon swapping the rear ends, everything is done except bleeding the brakes and installing the diff cover/adding fluid. It'll probably be next weekend before i get to that though..

I did install a new set of control arm relocation brackets, that went pretty smooth. The biggest pain in the ass was the E-brake. lol

                  • for some reason both cables weren't at the same length (the inner), they're off by about 3/4".. lol

tonight i finally got the TA diff girdle installed, once the RTV is set i'll add in the fluid. I went with the good Royal Purple stuff.

Was going to bleed the brakes (and holy crap, this rear has bleeders that aren't rusted to hell!) but i don't have enough fluid on hand.. gotta wait till tomorrow. damn

                    • And it moves!

I drove it a whole 50' yesterday. Still needs a good shakedown but so far the brakes seem to work well.

Also, I believe I found the cause of my "Gangster lean".. One of the rear springs wasn't sitting right in the rubber isolator. Right now the car is sitting level.

Pic of the new rear with the TA girdle and LCARBS installed.

rear end looks nice. then you got the mufflers hiding behind it.

                        • You know I've always just taken it as "fact", but now I just don't understand a swaybar on a RWD axle. Sure the FWD rear axles flex like crazy, but the RWD axle is going to flex? Then there are the rubber bushings on each end. What is that for? A little flex?

Sway bars are actually "anti roll bars", that are for body roll, not flex. Ever jack one side of your car up and try to pull down on the wheel? Do the same with a sway bar disconnected and you will see how they work. If one wheel is pushed up into the body, the bar acts as a spring lever and tries to mimic the opposing wheel is doing.

                            • I can understand it in the front or IRS. Just can't wrap my mind around how it works on a solid axle. It just seems like the axle would be doing all the work anyway. I'll look it up online.

                              • Since it's mounted to the body it tries to equalize the suspension travel between sides. Over things like speed bumps when hit head on they do absolutely nothing since suspension travel between sides is equal already. It's basically a torsion spring between each wheel vs the body. That's how it can work on a solid axle.
