  • The 60 degree family tree

Ok what I am working on is a complete 60* V6 family tree. http://members.shaw.ca/betterthanyou...degreetree.htm

This way we will be able to look up what changes were made and when. This is especially useful when you wat to know when engines increased in displacement, changes intake styles. Also dont forget the old blocks that had small main journals and small valve heads. Because we all want to steer clear of thoes.

I have laid down the ground work but I KNOW I am mission information.

I am asking for everyones input on ANYTHING that is missing. Especially weird things that I could not find on the web. I dont have the power ratings in tere right now but I will add them.

Some things I know I dont have

    - When did the Camaro recieve fuel injection of the 2.8L. Im pretty sure it went to MPFI right away and never saw TBI. 2.8L and 3.1L camaro used distributors right? I know the 3.4L's got DIS.
    - When the Gen III heads were introduced did they recieve D shaped exhaust ports the first year?
    - What kind of water pump did the old carbureted FWD cars use? Was it the same as the ones the camaro and S-10 got?
    - I know when the S-10 got a serpentine belt setup but when did FWD cars and Camaros change?
    - Were their any weird oil pan querks like there were with the S-10 in the early years?
    - When Iron heads increased to the 3.1L they had a slight dish and a piston height change what were they? Was the piston height reduced by the same 4mm as the FWD engines?
    - Older 3100's I know had plastic valve covers when did aluminum ones return?

Anything else you see please let me know.

94 = DOHC got MAF and no more manual tranny option.

96 = DOHC got different cams, heads, and intakes. Also went to OBD2.

this is still up in the air, but id say in 96 the 3100/3400 heads got notched rocker arm stud holes, and roller fulcrum rocker arms. In 96 i know they used aluminum valve covers, not sure about 95. There were quite a few differences with the 3100 v.s. 3.1, not sure how many you want to list.. main ones being introduction of powder metal cross bolted main caps, cast aluminum oil pan, and a windage tray.
      I modify stuff

Well, considering all 96+ heads got the roller rockers, I'd have to say they all got the notches as well... It was in 95 when some of the heads started to get the notches, but still had stamped rockers.

All GEN-III heads have had D-shaped exh ports, since they were introduced in late-93. I have a TSB discussing the plastic versus aluminum rocker covers (http://www.60degreev6.com/TSB/TSB10-3x00.html), and it only discusses 93-95, so I would assume the switch occured mid-year in 95.

I'm guessing you have seen this then: http://www.60degreev6.com/index.php?p=sections&sid=24

It looks like you got most of the information that I have listed. If you goto the 3100 performance section, and look up camshafts, it also discusses the changes made for the cam trigger. There have been 3 changes made there over the years.

I know on 94 GA's the covers were plastic, then in 95 they switched to metal. But we already knew that...

The 3100 actually debuted in 93 in at least 1 car, if not 2. And the 3.1L remained in the J-bodies, as well as a couple W-bodies (IIRC) for 94.

OBD2 wasnt in 3100s till 96. It is OBD1.5 (really OBD 1 with some OBD2 implements and a non memcal ECM) from 94-95. The 3.4 DOHC is MPFI till 94, where it is SFI.

The 3100 was introduced mid year 93 in the cutlass supreme AFAIK.
