This is what happened to my 3100 in my 2003 malibu when the valve spring broke, actullay not as much damage as i thought there was. Bent the intake valve in such a way that the it pushed up on the exhaust valve and caused it to stick open and bent the electrod on the sparkplug, also bent the push rod, all it did to the piston was put a mark on the top of the piston, i am going to pull it out to make sure it isnt cracked. Its probably a good thing I was only going 35 mph and about 1300rpm when this happened or it could have been alot worse.

stock springs?
it's rare for stockers to go like that, but damn . . .
coulda been worse, for sure. Have a reputable machine shop check that head out, too.N-body enthusiast:

yeah, they where stock springs, all i had done to the motor when this happened was a cold air intake and msd coils and plug wires, the car only had 55,000 miles on it when this happened, and i am not the easiest driver in the world, but i never "beat" on my car, so i was very surprised that this happened

i pulled the piston out and it looks good, i just had a little bure on the top of it where the valve hit it, i cleaned that off and she is good to go
