  • 1:6 comp cams rockers help

Installed 1:6 comp cams (magnum) roller rockers on my 3.1 about 6 months ago, they worked fine at that time. Went on a trip for some training and did not drive the car for 6 months. Now, when I start the car there is a "ticking" sound from cylinder either #6, or #4. The sound is there all the time and the top end seems to be missing.

    Questions:
    1. could my lifter have just "gone bad"?
    2. only put about 20 miles on car after installation 6 months ago, was nottold, didnt read anything about re tourquing, reverifying "zero lash".
    3. How would I test the lifters?
    4. I can get some lifters from an 4.3,are they the same? (have ben told all SBC famliy lifters are)

RE: 1:6 comp cams rockers help

i'd check the valve lash and make sure that hte rocker arm is tightened down before starting to worry about the lifters

What kind of rockers are they got a pic?

Also did you make sure there was no spring bind. I am not sure what the stock springs can take but you always gotta check when adding lift.

How do I check valve lash? pre-load the lifter and check for movement of the push rod?

        Comp Cams (Magnum Rollers)

        Thanks for the help.

Did you grind down your guideplates so the pushrods don't hit them?

Have checked out the crane cams web site (last night) good info

also ground down the guide plates, using the comp cams hardened push rods (correct length).

how long did you let it run when you got back? maybe it needs to warm up good and get some good oil flow to that spring/rocker/pushrod. i always get some ticking after a fresh topend replacement or if the car/engine has set without running for a long time.

and you did put some storage gas treatment in your tank before you left right? if not, you could have bad gas causing the miss.

I put SATBIL in all cars I store, have never had anyproblems.

I let the car idle for 10 min before driving, checking oil first.

IMO its got to be a loose rocker arm due to the cold weather, when I did the rcockers t was like 110, nowit is in the 40's. Its sounds like #6 or #4, the spark plugs didnt tell me anything.

                  I'll keep you posted.

                  Thanks again for the help.

I noticed a little more ticking when I had the 1.6s in my old 92. It maybe because of the adjustable rocker studs? Im not real sure, though. Valve lash is first place I would start. Keep us posted

This is what I was thinking also. In the 2.8, the springs are only rated up to .420 lift so if you use 1.6 rockers you need to change the springs. A lot of people argue about this saying that they have installed 1.6 rockers and they've been fine but, usually after time, they start showing problems. Crane and Comp Cams both make better springs that can handle these rockers without any problems. I have a set of 1.6 roller tipped Comp Cams rockers on my 2.8 right now. I've had them in the car since Feb 04 and I drive the car everyday without any problems. I replaced my stock springs with Crane springs when I did the rockers.
