  • Low mount alternator w/ A/C?

anyone done it? it would save me some headache with the dogbone/anti-rotation mount on my Fiero.

    Edit:

Forgot to add, it's a 3500 that I'm working with.

    What exactly are you asking?

For reference, I just got the engine out of my fiero and am prepping to drop the 3900 in it. I think the exterior package is nearly identical between the two (not totally sure though).

If so let me know what you need, I'm planning on making some custom brackets.

In my case I'm going to attempt to use the stock alternator mount for a dog bone mount and re-mount the alternator near stock fiero location, since the 3900 puts it way up high where I have to cut things to make it fit.

There is a slight chance the alternator mount is too weak and I may have to make a new cross over pipe.

I think the older 3500 uses a different mount bracket/timing cover.

    Any ideas?

Nate, your 3900 is different than Eric's 3500.

I have used (also seen it on a turbo 3500 in RWD config) the 2 holes on the lower left of the block, by the crank to mount an alternator bracket. But again, that's a different scenario since I was using the RWD timing cover.

Interested to see what you come up with using the FWD cover.

Nate, you can't mount the alternator there with the 3x00 timing cover, because the belt runs almost 2 inchs closer to the block than with the Fiero/RWD cover. I'm going to stop by B&M starter and alternator here in Pensacola and see if he has any low profile alternator options, or see if he can build me a high output corvair alternator, with a serpentine pulley so I can mount it in a similar fashion as my power steering pump, but that would make belt changes HELL!

also Nate, I wouldn't trust the alternator mount for the dogbone, but it would be easy enough to make one.
