  • TB coolant bypass, cause vacuum leak?

Curious, do the coolant lines on the 3100 and 3400 TB actually connect to the intake side of things? I did a coolant bypass on those lines, and my mechanic said that it caused a vacuum leak, which would make sense given the problems I have been having with the car, but afaik those coolant lines didn't connect to the intake tract at all, I always thought the pipe just ran right through and was completely solidly walled?
I believe him, I am just surprised that the coolant line there would have any connection to the intake air?

Doing the coolant bypass wouldn't cause a vacuum leak. If the coolant went into the intake tract, then you'd be introducing coolant into the engine, which isn't really the best thing.

Well he mentioned there is some sort of check ball or valve or something there, that could be bad. A vacuum leak really does seem plausible, and he said he hooked up a vacuum gauge to it and had a reading too...only other thing he did was change the TPS and it runs right again...Just doesn't make sense to me, that that pipe wouldn't be 100% isolated from the actual intake air stream, but again, even before he looked at it, I suspected vacuum leak and or one of the sensors.

I think your mechanic is blowing smoke up your butt. They sometimes do that if they're having trouble figuring out the problem.

x2 maybe you just bumped something when doing your coolant bypass?

x2, if it runs right after the TPS was changed then your good to go. the only check ball there is on the motors is the 2000+ valve cover vent line that runs to the upper intake.

            Its runs!!!>>>Aint No 60* Sound Like Mehttp://youtu.be/YKEmNwa141U

Didn't you change TB's not too long ago? I would look at that first as the area where a vacuum leak would be happening.

I had to put the 3100 TB back on to get it to run right, I guess tomorrow or day after I will attempt to get it to run with the 3400 again, and see if it really is pulling vacuum, he said he had a vacuum gauge to it which is pretty infallible, and he seems to know his stuff decently well, but I guess I will have to check for myself to be sure, worst case scenario, I will just seal off the 3400 coolant pipes with heater hose, if that one pulls vacuum, gonna check both. Hopefully it will play nice with the 3400 TB this time around, but at least if not I can get an instructor to help me figure it out, lol. I REALLY want that response and top end, moment that pedal twitched it was gone....
Also on a slightly off topic note, I misplaced the original plate from the 3100 TB, and substituted one from a 3.4 gen 1 cause I needed it running, I noticed that the 3.4 gen 1 plate had a small little hole dead center, above the shaft, does the 3100 TB have that? My assumption is it helps let enough air through for idle, but I wonder if the 3100 has that also that maybe that was part of my issue trying to run the 3400 TB, which has no hole in the plate?
Good news is I have some of the other kinks of the car worked out or in progress at least, glued the rearview mirror back up, replaced an absolutely decimated fuse, I've seen less melted grilled cheese sandwiches..set off a whole slew of codes and ran crappy, but it just needed a reset, ran fine after. Hopefully my gas gauge won't drop to empty anymore since it was the gauges fuse, just need to re-align the shifter indicator, and put in the new cig lighter socket I got so I can use my gps again, for some reason the new one is slightly too wide cause of these stupid flute things on it, a quick go over from the dremel will make it fit I'm sure....
Other than that just need to get it to play nice with the 3400 TB, and get rid of those god awful white walls that are on the back and dry rotted a tad, I am surprised they passed inspection being dry rotted....might try and pick up some 16" beretta or GA rims for it, kind of partial to the GA rims that look like a throwing star.
