  • Newbie with TB Question

I have a '99 Grand Am SE 3.4 LA1. It has the 54mm TB. I'm wanting to upgrade to the 65mm TB.

I am doing some upgrades, one I'm having problems finding out is about the TB Swap.

I got a 65mm TB off a 2000 olds Aurora (it had the 3.5L motor)

The throttle cable attachment is the same as my TB.

What I'm trying to find out, is this a direct swap (PnP), does it require some modding, or is not not going to work at all. I tried doing a search, but I can't find anything directly related to this.

    Is there a write-up?

I'm over at the (http://www.gaownersclub.com/), and I couldn't find anything there either.

    Any help would be appreciated.

First off, welcome to the site!

To answer your question, you will need an adapter to get it to mount to the plenum. WOT-Tech sells one (http://wot-tech.com/shop/all/lx5-65m.../prod_141.html), but it appears they are currently out of stock.

      Thanks for that!

I'll watch the link for the part to come in. I will have to see if the gas (other lines) will line up, but that adaptor is missing the hole (slot) in the bottom for the coolant to cool the TB?? Or is it not needed?

Will the rest just bolt up? would I have to do anything else to get it to work on my LA1?

Thanks again, and thanks for the warm welcome.

The coolant to the TB depends on your climate, really. If you live way up north in Canada, it would be a good idea. If you live somewhere warm like Florida, Texas or California then it's not needed. GM runs coolant through the TB to keep it from icing over so you don't get stuck in a situation where the car won't come down off of throttle and return to idle.

I live in Calgary Alberta, So yeah, I'll have to mod the adaptor. Thanks for the info.

I think the TB I have is from an LX5. I was told it would work... I'm wondering if it will. the cable hookup is the same, I need to see if the hoses, and the sensors will work.

with your coolant, you should be fine in calgary alberta, if it were past fort mcmurry then i would deffinetly consider it, how ever i dont think calgary sees as harsh climate conditions (-45-65*c)

yeah, not that cold. I think the coldest I've seen (raw temps and not counting windchill) is about -33*C. I've seen it colder in Brandon, MB.
