  • Is nitrous safe for my setup? (3500T @ 5psi-hot)

So Im curious if I can run a wet 50 shot on my turbo 3500 safely. The motor is stock w/70k miles and I'm only running 5psi with a slightly small turbo. Im not sure of intake temps but it is non-intercooled in a Fiero. I was thinking that the nitrous would really help cool down the charge. I'm going to the track and want to run good times (grudge match with a Turbo MR2 ). The car runs great as is except for a few drivability issues. I think it will be safe, I just don't want to grenade this engine.

Also, would throwing in some race gas help give me a little more safety? Or is it not needed with such low boost. I also have some methanol. Can I mix that with my 93 to increase octane and cooling?

Thanks in advance guys! I know they sound like noob questions, but I just want some smart, calculated opinions.

Here's a pic of my setup. I'm thinking of putting the bottle in the right corner of my trunk. Any problems with this or should i just put it up front in the Frunk? I kinda need that space for my tools though.

i don't know if I'd want my bottle right next to a hot turbo, too much pressure in there, along with a volatile compound...

so, did you decide to keep the stubby firebird after all?

By itself, nitrous isnt a flammable compund. It is an oxidizer and makes present fire bigger...

well, my mine concern was the pressure, heat+pressure=boom, whether the stuff is flammable or not...

It would eliminate the need for a bottle warmer, lol.

yeah, and very possible eliminate the whole trunk too.

I guess I should have added [/sarcasm] to the end of my post. Text is hard to read peoples emotion at times. I personally agree, putting the bottle back there would be a bad idea. It's not like putting it in the front trunk would leave you no space for simple tools.

I caught on to the sarcasm, I just tend not to joke when something has the potential to kill.

So I fixed an exhaust leak today and picked up 2 more pounds. So Im on 7 psi! Haha! That little extra has me thinking not to go with n2o. I started building my alky/H2O kit. I have everything ready to it install tommorrow. Im using a hobbs switch, SureFlow pump, 2.5qt jug, and some pieces from my nitrous kit. Should work well for a cobbled together kit. Im gonna put on a manual boost controler and turn it up to 10psi. With the extra octane and water to cool the charge it shouldnt detonate.

Wish my luck at the track!

NOS is an oxidizer. It increases the amount of oxygen in the chamber, thats how you get your "pop" of more power. Running a wet system is the way to go. Doing anything ANYTHING, even more boost, without knowing chamber temps is a risk at slagging pistons. Get a pyrometer in your exhaust, close to the head, preferably in your manifold and take a reading. Then based on your numbers, under-boost and WOT, figure out if you can add more boost/NOS. Try to keep your exhaust gases under 2100. Of course, that depends on pistons, wear, octane, intake air temp, etc. You can cool your burn by adding more fuel and/or inter-cooling your charge air. Watch your knock sensor closely and watch for pre-detonation ping. Then slowly increase boost, NOS, retard timing, and good gas.

There's an old joke, How do you adjust a supercharger? You turn it all the way up til the engine blows, then back it off a half a turn.

Low/No flow EGR valve, block off plate.
Carbon canister and purge valve mod, place in large 30 Gallon can, cover, and place curbside, the city will do the rest.
PCV valve and vent tube, reroute to exhaust to dump where it belongs, on the ground. Or add breathers and let it all free.

Maybe he did move the tank to the rear trunk...

That's some good advice, and I like the joke at the end. It's like the one line I read in a book. "Nitrous doesn't kill engines, idiots kill engines." Know your engines limits, and don't go beyond them. As Ben always says when it comes to tuning, give the engine what IT wants, not what YOU want it to take.
