  • building a motor for my 86 z24 cavalier

i have an 86 z24 cavalier with a 2.8l mpfi motor. its a gen 1 ironhead with a distributor. im looking to build a motor up for it, and i know i have a lot of options out there. here are some ideas im toying with

    1)a 2.8l HO from a fiero
    2)a 3.4l camaro
    3)a 3.1l lumina apv

i need some info for all of these options. here are some specific questions for each

1)what fiero did the 2.8ho come in???
2)how hard is it to redrill the starter??? what was the hp and torque on this motor stock??? is there a fair bit of aftermarket for this engine??? are the rwd mount holes in the same spot as a fwd block, or am i going to need a custom mount??? what is the stock compression of this motor??? will my intake bolt on???
3)will my complete intake bolt on to this motor??

i want to keep the ironheads so a newer top end swap is out of the question. im looking to keep compression around 9.5:1, and im looking for 200hp without nitrous. im planning on juicing this motor in the future. im also looking to run high 13s without juice. what would be my best brt??? right now my car realy stumbles above 5000rpm, and the low end isnt great either. my best run is a 17.43. i want something that has a good powerband, i dont want to favor low or high end.

Why do you want to keep the iron heads? Your best bet would be a 3400 since it is the highest starting HP engine out there.

the main thing is wiring. in my car, i would need to change the ecm so i have a the DIS. to do that, i have to get a complete unmolested wiring harness and rewire my engine bay and dash, and most of the rest of the car in order for it to work. and i have though about using an msd dis setup with my current ecm, but hte problem is if the ecm doesnt get a refference signal from the distributor, it goe into "limp in". also the front engine mount is a big issue. i know i can get them, but i dont know how long its going to take and if i dont get it, im screwed.

thats why i want to keep ironheads. unless someone can figure out how to run a distributor in a 3400.
