  • 2.8 Oil Filter Adapter Bolt

I have a 3.4 Crate Engine that did not come with an oil filter adapter. This engine was purchased to be installed in a small sports car so I don't have a core engine to get parts off. I was able to buy a new housing and assumed the bolt and gaskets would come with it. Wrong assumtion!

I think the part number is 12537215 but I am not sure that is correct. From the local GM dealership parts department I have been told GM no longer has it availible and there doesn't seem to be any aftermarket suppliers. I thought I might be able to get one from a salvage yard last saturday only to find out that you have to remove an engine mount to get the bolt out. Not an easy task in a junk yard at least where I was at.

Anyone know where I might get one? Anyone have an extra I could buy? Any ideas? Can't install engine (Motor Mount Clearance Problem) until I can find the adapter bolt. Thanks in advance!

I got one out of a 95-97 Grand Am with the 3100 at the wreckers, took less that 2 minutes to get the housing and Bolts.
Then use a universal seal kit for the oring and gasket.

The older adapter is different then the ones used on a 3x00. I do not believe the new one will work, however you should be able to use one from any 2.8/3.1 equipped vehicle.

The newer Oil Filter Adapters are not the same. The unit I need is the same as off a S-10 pickup which the oilfilter is horizonal to the ground and side of the engine block. On the pickups there is a single bolt that goes through the center of the oil filter adapter and a pin that locates the position and keeps the adapter from rotating. In the S-10 pickup the drivers side engine mount will not allow the bolt to be backed out and removed without first removing the engine mount. I have been told the mid/late 80's Camaro uses the same bolt and adapter but is accessable without removing the engine mounts. I guess it means another trip to the salvage yard. Thanks for your input!

However the one of the 95 Grand Am 3100 did fit on my 3500.
I needed it in order to have the J Body AC lines fit.
Why do you need it? The one of am thinking of makes the filter sit 90* from the ground.

The car will have very limited ground clearance, a little bit over 4 inches. The oil pan is already a source for concern. With the S-10 oil filter adapter it keeps the filter horizonal to the ground an out of the way. The drawback is the filter can't be filled with oil during oil changes. I may have found what I need on e-bay and am waiting for a picture. Thanks

FYI, the adapter on the 3.4 also houses the filter bypass valve. Without the adapter, you'll have 0 oil pressure.

Thanks all who added comments. I was able to get the oil filter adapter bolt needed ata salvage yard from a 1989 Firebird. It is exactly the same bolt and oil filter housing as used on the 2.8 V6 Chevy S-10 pickup except it was not hidden behind and within the drivers side engine mount. While at the salvage yard I was also able to get a behousing dust/dirt shield which GM no longer produces. good trip even though it was extremely hot outside!
