  • Are these the right rods??

I have a turbo3400 v6 in my 2001 cavalier. I am upgrading to a 70 mm turbo from a 60 and I am going to make a stronger bottom end as I have already buckled one rod. I think I have found the right sbc rods for machining to fit my 3400 with my weisco pistons. THese rods are on summits website p/n: SCA-6570020R. I still have the stock size wrist pin but I have a shop which is going to machine the rod and bush it for me. I just need to know are there any reasons not to use this rod for fitting my appliation or any 3400 for that matter? I think the dimensions such as 2" crank, etc are right. Any opinions?

I've always wondered if anyone has destroyed a stock rod from power and not RPM, and well I guess this answers my question, and adds rods to my list of additions in later years for a stronger bottom end. This year it just wasn't possible. I've spent enough alread

I bent a rod bacause my boost conrtoller built into megasquirt somehow failed and stuck the silonoid open I guess because it max the boost guage but by then it was too late. THe car spun out madly in first as it always does, then in second too but it usually starts to get grip twoards the top of second, then in third it still felt like first but at the top of third gear is hooked up and then was hauling made before I looked at the boost guage and then by the time I realized kaboom, it sounded like I cracked the exhaust manifold off but this was the rear head casket, all of the fire rings blew out. I did not even get to put it in fourth and still ran 12.8 @ 94 mph, I usually run 12.2 @ 123 mph. I got it all home took it apart and noticed one piston would not come all of the way up and the piston would hit the crank counter weight when rotating the engine. The piston made it but the rod has a bad bend. I just rebuilt with stock parts for the time being but not it is time for an annual tear down and I am putting better back there.

Yea so power did not kill the rod it sounds like detonation did since it also blew the head gasket.

If it was tuned for the oops amount of boost, it may have lived to see many other days. What was it spiking? What was your target boost (setting) ? You ever dyno the motor? If so, what kind of dyno?

yeah but to run that "oops" amount of power all the time, stock WILL NOT cut it.. lol

I cannot answer the question of what caused it for sure as there were no speckles on the spark plugs. I am using megasquirt for management and only had a table to 220 kpa for fuel and also spark. I think you could be right but if it did have any detonation it happened quickly as the boost ran out of high enough number in the fuel and spark tables to run the engine with that much boost. I would say when it hit about 20psi things started to go wrong quick. I did not hear any detonation and I know what it sounds like as I have had some audible detonation when first tuning the car and also our 91 oct gas here in Newfoundland is very unpredictable from station to station and not even consistant at the same station. I can get good gas at esso and give the car a hell of a night without a ping and then two weeks later get gas at the same spot and have to turn the timing back 2-3 degrees to stop pings. I have dynod the car on a dynodynamics load dyno and got 373 hp and 388 tq @ 15 psi. THe numbers should be higher but this dyno is known as the heartbreaker for a reason and seems to be more evident on any turbocharged cars that use it. Also there was no spiking just pegging of the boost guage. Hard to watch guages when the car spins like its on oil in first and second and the still doing it in third, it took me a second to catch up with what was happening, by that time it was too late, I did still run a 12.8 @ 94 without touching 4th gear, wonder what would have run if it lasted until the end of the track.

True, but you don't run it like that going to the daily job or school...... Unless your job consists of delivering babies and your school involves training for Pink All Out.
