Actually most case halves are made to be mated dry if there is not a gaskets available.

That's what i've been told but GM had some kind of clear sealant there when i first took it apart. It was a very thin layer.

Still. When you have 2 halves of a case that were machined simultaneously there is little need for gasket material. When I used to work on a lot of air-cooled VW's, silicone was a big no-no due to the fact that when you worked your way around the mating process, foreign matter (in this case even the slightest layer of silicone) could cause the 2 halves to "rock" on said matter, causing leaks. Think of a head bolting to a block when there was no head gaskets needed (like the Rolls engines), a spec of dirt actually could cause the other side of the head to fail...

My grampa has an old dirt bike that he said was made in Germany and was machined so well they didn't use gaskets in it. The name was something like Maco or something like that... I guess the compression on it was really high, and they stripped out the kick starter and everyone would have to help try to push start it. He said by the time they got it fired up everyone was too tired to kick their own bikes, lol. I wouldn't mind getting it from him, he still has it but said my uncle pwns it.
