  • S&S Header Issue - Oil Dip Stick

    Hello Forum,

Hope someone has dealt with this before. I bought S&S headers for my 3400, 99 Grand Am (one of my daughters cars). I tried to install the front header and found that the flange that connects the header pipes together and mounts flush to the cylinder head interferes with the oil dipstick. I tried bending the oil dipstick out of the way but the flange on the dipstick used to secure it to the engine can't get through the headers. I have emailed S&S but probably won't hear from them until tomorrow. The only solution that would appear to work is cutting the flange on the headers, which I will do if S&S agrees (other issues yet to be discovered may require that S&S be willing to take them back - they are expensive!). Any advice would be appreciated.

Just modify the bracket that holds the dip stick.

    I did it on mine.

    Took 5 seconds.

DO NOT CUT THE HEADER FLANGE!

And the chances of S&S accepting a return on a set of headers that have been installed are pretty slim.

Headers are a compromise in any application, and there will be some things that may have to be moved or modified.

      Eric,

Thanks for a quick response. I will take your advice and modify the oil dip stick.

all i did was modify the bracket that bolts the dipstick to the head. required a little bending of the bracket and it sits fine.

Yea, pull the dipstick tube out and install the header. Put the tube back in and bend the bracket to fit. It's not hard to do, just make sure that the o-ring on the tube stays in place and that the tube is fully seated in the block when you're done.
