  • what at the min is needed for 3400 to 3.4 top swap

i have been searching on the subject & have found out some useful information, but am unable to find out exactly what all im going to need to do this swap onto my 93 camaro 3.4 engine? i figure i need the heads, UIM, LIM-& maybe the tb/old injectors-but ive never done this before so im prolly wrong.

at this point in time im looking for the bare minimum that im going to need to use the heads & LIM off of a 98+ 3400, idk if the 3400 UIM will even fit-or should i use the 3.4 UIM/will that fit? i have read that if im not going roller rockers that i will need custom length pushrods-but i noticed some electronic equipment in the middle of the 2 sides of my UIM & without looking any further into it im really wondering where that piece will go or if it will even be there at all.

i have every intention of doing this swap, but im not going to start buying stuff until i know im not going to take my car off the road-tear into it-and need $700 worth of stuff to get it back on-so the more help the better!!

I think the 3400 UIM with the letters ground down will clear, but not positive. Good thing though you have a 93 so you can actauly tune it with the stock ECM!

i know-im SO happy its a 93 for that very reason!!! also im definitely doing to remove the letters-sand & paint the UIM to make it look nice, that is IF it will even fit!! also does anyone know if the 3.4 UIM will bolt to the 3400 LIM with some modification (NON drastic modification, that is :P)?

well that answers that question lol-i didnt think it would but i thought i should ask, because after all, it is chevy

i also intend on getting a chip from ben for this if possible, so if i get the thickest headgasket i can find (within reason) & get that chip-can i run that 12:1 CR on 92 octane and still have it run right-or will it knock like hell?

the only gaskets that i'm aware of is either the 3400 at .060 thickness, or the 3.4 mid 90's camaro at .040. 12:1 CR might be hard the the bearings unless you use a high pressure (80 psi) pump. I've heard people have had bearing issues with that kind of CR. you might be fine as long as you keep the timing down.

IIRC someone with a 3400 ran with RWD 3.4L pistons, with a cam and proper tuning. In a malibu I think.

So if you have a big cam and some good tuning you should be able to do it.

but is that going to kill my gas mileage when i drive it nicely? i mean to be honest if itll get poor gas mileage with a cam & these things done to it when i drive it nicely then i might as well put in a v8-but id really rather not...

that depends on a lot of factors. i know a 3.1 turbo with lots of custom stuff and a CR of 8.5. the cam was something like 256/244 @.050 lift, .630/.590 LSA114 and he got 28 highway as long a he simply drove it. he got it to go 12.3 @ 114 MPH in the 1/4 mile. maybe his cam has good volumetric efficency too.

if i get a roller cam or roller/hydraulic for it-will the 3400 pushrods work? and will the 3400 pistons work fine with the rods? if so what c/r would i be looking at with 98+ 3400 heads? (are the rods on the 3.4 the same as the ones in the 3400, or are they different?)

no. anytime you change your cam from stock to aftermarket or regrind, you'll need to have custom pushrods made. if you are using a higher ratio rocker, you don't.
