I have a chance to buy a 90 turbo grand prix for $900. It needs a engine the bottom end in knocking and the abs dont work. I cant find a engine for this car anywhere online. Can anyone help, is it worth the hassle. I was told the abs unit will be over $1000 alone. Any info will be great.

The long block itself are pretty much the same. Compression ratio = same, heads are the same, only thing different are the manifolds, some brackets, some sensors. All in which will swap right on over with very little to no modification.
3.1's are dime a dozen and around here, 150-300 bux depending where you go and how clean/up kept you want it.
900 for a TGP? That is GREAT if it were rust free or very minimal rust and the trans is strong. The abs/module can get costly, but you can convert it over to traditional vacuum brakes with some modifications.
Where are you located?Lifting my front wheels, one jack at a time.

Somethings Jeff M might have wrote or said I just cannot trust. When I looked up somethings through GM a while back, it all showed same internal design with exception of a certain couple years variants from the na to fi. Some na's had different heads at one point, but as the years went on and the 3.1 came out, they received the "turbo" heads design.
As much as I'd like to believe the TGP/STE-turbo edition had something special going on inside, it just didn't. That is probably one of the main reasons why they don't really have high rarity factor to them.Lifting my front wheels, one jack at a time.

I agree that the TGP engines are over-hyped, there are a few differences here and there but nothing drastic. People have swapped regular 3.1's in their place with all the stock turbo setup and had no problems.
I had a chance to buy a TGP engine once, i was going to gut it and post up the info.. never got around to going back to the junkyard though.

I have heard of the different heads design claim as well. It was in '90 I believe they were different?

I thought the owner of that TGP in Baltimore said that it was just smoking. It's knocking now?
Anyways, as far as differences vs. the Vin T vs. Vin V(turbo) 3.1 goes. The heads on the turbo engine have slightly larger combustion chambers resulting in the minimal compression difference. Jud aka Sleeperred90tgp(RIP) proved this years ago by cc'ing the combustion chambers. Before there, people believed the deck height to be different between the two...which isn't the case. Other NA 3.1's of the same era received the same heads as the turbo cars as far as I know. The crankshafts have been compared and there are no notable differences, but there is claimed to be a different part # for the turbo vs. regular(maybe they'll stiff you a few more bucks for the "turbo" one, lol). There are other differences also...but they're all pretty minor in my opinion. As someone else said, plenty of people have turbocharged the NA engines without a single problem and made quite a bit of power.Last edited by mfewtrail; 03-05-2009, 01:35 AM.
