  • 95 Camaro alum. head swap?

alright, no flame war here been searching and can't find quite what i need..... here's what i'm looking for.

i need to know just what is needed to swap to a 3400 top end in a 95 camaro. i have a buddy who wants to do it, and he wants me to help him out. i told him i'd look it up, but i couldn't find what was neccesary.

from what i understand, you just need the top end from the 3400, the timing cover and accesories from the RWD motor, and some high octane gas. any special parts need bought, like the rad. hoses you need to change out for the FWD 3400 swap?

i've heard it gives you anywhere from 11:1 - 13:1 compression, who can tell me the exact number? i'll try messing with the compression calc but i'm not very good with it... he doesn't mind the high compression
(EDIT: using the compresion calc., i got 12.38:1 w/ .060 HG's. that sound about right?)

i'd really appreciate any help. if you can link me to a discussion that will tell me what i need to know, that's ok too. TIA guys.

I'm know expert on this matter, but from my research ya can't just simply lsap on a 3400 top end and expect a good performing/running engine.

The problem is the compression ratio will be SO high that detonation is going to either destroy the motor and/or the ECM will retard the timing to a point, "why bother".

My plan is to rebuild a '93-'95 camaro 3.4 with a 3400 topend (including 3400 pistons), and retain *all* emissions that I can get away with (still researching what *that* aspect will entail. So, I'm also interested in hearing the "experts" weigh in ...

well see i told him his best bet might just be to get a complete 3400 motor and redrill the starter holes and get new mounts(do you need new mounts for the genIII block?) but we want to see if we can just do the top end first

He has a OBD1.5 computer which no one has reprogrammed yet, thats why he will have problems running high compression. And the 3400 block doesn't have an ear sticking out to drill and mount the starter. You will have to take the pistons out of the 3400 and use them in the 3.4.

so nobody can tell me just what parts i need to do the swap? looks to me like it just need the heads and intakes and pistons if he wants to lower the compression, and maybe figure out one rad hose and the throttle cable but a confirmation would be nice before we dig in :P

complete top end from heads up. You will also need custom length pushrods if using the none adjustable rockers, if using the gen 1 aluminum heads with the adjustable rockers you can also use there pushrods. There is a tab on top of the timing chain cover that will need to be ground off, you'll see it when putting the lim on. If running high you'll probably need bigger injectors (which is where the tuning problem comes in on the obd1.5). It's probably your best bet to change the pistons to keep the compression down. Mine is wanting to run on the warm side right now which I believe is from having the uim turned around, I'll be installing a crossover hose this week to allow circulation at the rear of the engine. You will also have to modify the brackets for the alt. and ac.
