  • What else can i do?!

Well now that i know that the car runs on it's own with no problems, what else is there that i can do for a '93 3.1L for power WITHOUT having to reprogram the computer. The engine has high compression pistons, agressive cam, and 1.6 rockers and that's it. There has to be something else that I can do to make more efficient power. The motor now has a lot of potential but is limited by the air being "inhaled and exhaled." I know for a fact that the stock manifolds suck ass, (just look at them!)but it looks difficult to fabricate my own and i'm NOT spending 1200 bucks for a set like JBP wants. Is there anyone else who has made a set that also sells them at a reasonable price or who can give me tips on building my own?
Also is it possible to swap throttle bodies?
I'm going to be pulling the motor and trans back out so i can prep and paint the engine compartment, so now is a good time to get my stuff together. Can anyone help me out here? I know that lately i've been asking a lot of questions but that's because no-one that I know has a J-body let alone modified one and the guys on J-body.org dont really care about 2nd gen. stuff.

    Thanks for your time.

I told you man, join up over at www.v6z24.com.. you'll find tons of ideas over there and there are quite a few Jbody owners in Indiana.

your computer needs to be tuned for the mods you have right now, anything like cam changes, higher compression etc should be adjusted for.

your options for improved exhaust manifolds are pretty much the newer style from the 3400.. they'll bolt right up but you'll have to have a new downpipe made. They're probably worth 2-5 HP alone and maybe 5-7 overall if you have a good exhaust system behind them.

Forced Firebird has started making universal headers for the FWD V6's, not sure when they'll be done though. You can also buy a set of S&S headers for a 3400 SFI Grand Am and modify the rear one to fit the J-body. I'd imagine a few cuts with a hack saw and re-welding a few seams should make them fit decently.

Why wont you tune? Tuning your pcm is probably one of the better things you can do right now. You are more than likely not getting the most out of your mods because you still have a stock pcm.

Both Superdave & Nick-G are correct. You won't see your maximum potential out of your mods without a proper tune. Tuning does take time and cost money, but it is well worth it. The tuning I have done with Ben's help thru Josh (oldschoolgp), has already helped me drop over a 1/4 second off my ET. I bet that once the tuning is done, I will be able to drop about another 1/4 second. Then once I add the headers, we will need to tune all over again, but that will be worthwhile as well. Once I can show the gains made by the headers that my buddy & I built, we hope to make and sell additional sets. Unfortunately, that may not be until winter or spring though. It also depends on how soon we can both get working on the project. If you can weld, or know someone who can, and you get the bends, you can make a custom set yourself. It just takes time. There just isn't a fast cheap way to get headers for these cars unless you do it yourself.

Well then, how do you tune a obd 1 computer? Is that one of things where you have a chip burned? I dont know anyone who does that. I have the time obviously, but i dont know who could tune my car. WTF do you suggest?

Ben (sappyse107 - owner of WOT-Tech) is like an hour from you, so he could easily tune your chip.
