  • putting an fwd 3100 or 3400 in a 2wd s10

well guys-considering that the z24 that i intended to get was sold i am now looking into other alternatives-i can get my hands on a 2.8 2wd s10 quite easy & im curious as to if there would be a lot of difference between swapping a 3100 or a 3400 into one of those (a late 80s early 90s one) and doing a normal 2.8/3.1-3x00 swap on an fwd car (other than the motor mounts)-and where would i go to get mounts for such an application-and how much weight would either of the 2 options be adding over the stock 2.8?

the fwd starters on the drivers side, you may be able to use a 4 cly. bellhousing I believe the starter is on the drivers side on those.

the 3100 and 3400 are lighter then the old 2.8's by like 50 or 60 lbs..

I've been thinking about a similar swap as well, using my 3500 mated to either a 700R4 or a T5.

what about the starter location? and is the bellhousing on the fwd's removable or is it made into the tranny?

i swapped a 3.4 from a camaro into my s-10, that is much easier than using the 3400 fwd motor odviously, the stock starter on an s 10 is on the right side, if you wanted to use a fwd block you would have to extend the wired, it's easier to use the 3.4 from the camaro, and use the tbi from the s 10 just port the intake manifold and the heads, the swa took 3 days max

the rwd starter is on the passenger's side while the fwd is on the drivers side. The s-10 4 cyclinder 5-speed bellhousings are 2 piece and has the starters on the drivers side. I'm think the fwd are made together.

Another problem to look at is the oil pan. The box-shaped pan from a FWD will make it difficult to clear the cross member - either the frame or pan needs modification.

The starter issue can be solved by making a bracket to move it, much like the Fiero's are doing to the 3.4 Camaro blocks. Not sure if the bellhousing can take the stress of being notched to leave the starter where it is, but then it will reside in the same location as the oil filter. This can be fixed by using a remote mount oil location.

Only one motor mount will need to be fabricated, the FWD block shares the passenger mounting boss with the RWD.

my girlfriend is seriously talking about getting a 4x4 s10 that came with a 4.3 originally, and putting my 3.1 in it after i take it out for the turbo swap-if i get a 2.8 truck oil pan from the early 90s will it work with this? also this would be on an auto-so what bellhousing should i get and if it was an early-90's with a fuel injected 4.3 can i hook the ecu right up or will i have to cut & match wires to the plug for the new ecu?

the bellhousing doesn't come apart on the auto transmission. You'll have to get a 60 deg 4x4 transmission to put the 3.1 in it.

How about using all the goody's from fwd 60's on rear wheel drive block? I would consider getting rid of my olds and get a camaro or firebird just for the rear drive platform? Can it be done? That would be sweet!

Umm, have you not seen any of my threads?

I have a 3.4/3500 twin turbo hybrid in the works for my Firebird.

I have helped build a couple N/A 3.4/3500's and they scream. March is coming fast, and I have a customer dropping his car off at the shop for a few weeks to a month. We will have dyno numbers and track times then...

GUESS I WAS PAYING TO MUCH ATTENTION TO THE FWD STUFF? SO THEN,MY QUESTION IS, HOW MUCH N/A POWER CAN YOU GET FROM A 3.4/3500 COMBO AND STILL BE STREETABLE? I KNOW WHERE I CAN GET A 1987 FIREBIRD 2.8 V6 FOR 800 BUCKS,IT HAS ALMOST 250,OOO ON HER BUT STILL IN (GOOD) SHAPE. COPARED TO PUTTING A BUILT 3500 IN MY CIERA,WHICH I ALREADY OWN,WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL BE MORE LOGICAL, AND A MORE BUDGET ORIENTATED BUILD? WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A HIGH 13 SEC. CAR I CAN DRIVE TO WORK EVERYDAY WITH LOW MAINTENENCE.
