  • Turbo 3.1's and transmissions

Thanks for the help with the computer. My big project for my 6k is to drop a turbocharged/intercooled 3.1 from a TGP Grand Prix into it. As far as I understand, it should be a pretty much straight drop-in; but I'm wondering about transmissions. I'm impressed with the power that these engines make stock, but I'm thinking that 8lbs of boost just isn't enough for me. If I kicked the psi up a little bit (2-4 more lbs), other than harder engine internals, would I have to do anything else to handle it? If so, how do you help a transmission cope with more power than stock? I don't know if I'll want to take an automatic or the 5-speed, but I don't want to boost the power and then have the transmission blow up, or to have an axle snap, something like that. Any info here would be excellent. Thanks guys.
P.S.- I've heard that stock these motors made ABOUT 205 horses. I'm not shooting for the moon, just about 250-270.

the platform you pick will help dictate which trany to use.

Well I'd assume it's an A body, since he said it was his "6k".

I wouldn't use anything other than the TGP 4T60 as they just won't hold up as well (besides the 5 speeds). I considered dropping the extra turbo 3.1 I have into my Ciera, but the 3300 is still running great(200,000+) so there was no point. Plus, it would be much easier if it was a 2.8/3.1 already. I dropped it into a '90 Euro Lumina instead since it's a straight bolt-in.

There's is no need to change the engine internals at all with around 11-12psi. Jeff M. is the only guy that makes chips for TGPs at this time and I have one of his TopGun chips. His chip runs 11.6 psi of boost and are probably one of the best upgrades for a TGP. Your also going to need a new x-over since all stock ones leak and cause the car to run rich. He remakes the x-overs with new flex joints and they are very nice, but $$$.

I would stick with the A-body radiator and get a front mount intercooler since the A-bodies have lots of room to run pipes out. There are some changes that need to be made to the wiring harness. The EGR wiring changes for the boost control solenoid, MAT(or IAT) sensor wiring needs to be longer, and you have to change the plug on the MAP sensor connector. A-bodies are lighter than w-bodies so it should be quite a bit faster than a TGP. My 4-door Ciera weighed in at 3360 lbs with me in it and a 1/2 tank of gas. The TGP weighed in at 3590 lbs with me and almost a full tank.
