  • GEN-III Double Roller TC update

For those who haven't been following this project, the sprockets are made from billet 4140, use a standard Cloyes chain and will allow cam timing to be set at 0, +3, +6, -3 & -6.

Here's a pic of the progress to date.

(edit) Fixtures are finished and engraving is complete. Still need to cut keyways. Getting closer.

How much will they cost and when will they be available? I have been hoping that this would get done before I assembled my engine. Will I "get lucky"?

                  Thanks guys.

I won't have a final price until all the bills come in for the outside services (gear hobbing, heat treating and keyway cutting).

They are at heat treat now and barring any unforeseen problems, they should be ready in a couple of weeks.

These were designed to fit under a FWD cover with minimal grinding. With each TC set, I will be supplying a small step gage to check for proper clearance. The oil galley plugs (behind the upper sprocket) need to be shortened and possibly the areas around the plugs. The inside of the cover may require a small amount of cutting with a disc grinder.

The camo material was left over from my sons project. He picked up a trashed 600RR, did some rough patching of the fairing and tank, then covered the bike with the camo cloth. I guess it's a ratbike, different but looks pretty good really. The camo does a decent job of covering the rough body work. Guess that's why it's called camouflage.

                      Nice work!
You are right about the cam and the plate.
I should of meantioned you need to leave a little clearance, like a hardened washer on the cam sproket so they don't get sandwiched together.
I though I did meantion that in one post though.

You are doing it right though for sure.
If I had the time and machine shop thats how I would of done it.

Even with the keys cut and the heat treating, the sproket should not be too much.

I will deffinately want one as well.

Where are you going to sell them, the store here? or do we get them right from you?

These will be available through the store as we don't sell direct.

I edited the first post about the progress and added another picture.

I see that you are going to cut multiple key way's in the crank gear?

Very clever I was thinking you would be drilling multiple holes for the pin.

EDIT: What's your plan for tolerance compared to the different generations? The Gen1 is almost a press fit gear on the crank key, where as the Gen3 is a loose fit. I would think it needs to match the Gen3 because the crank gear is what takes up the lateral movement. The Gen1 allows the cam to take the slack and the crank gear is stationary.

Do you think the multiple key ways are going to cause issue with the gear strength or stability to hold true timing?

                              Nevermind, 4140...

PS: What are you using to stain your engravings? Dykem seems to work good.
