This is why... give it another 10k and I would have had no oil pressure... This is on my 15k mile Daily driven hybrid with a milzy stage one and LS6 springs.
No, The company he got his cams from recommended a bronze gear or a mellonized gear. I wasn't aware he actually said to use it, as I was the one that originally posted that the stock oil pump drive gear may be a bad idea for the billet cams. The point of bronze is to wear, so you don't wear the gear on the cam. Its doing its job. As for how long it is lasting, I don't know how long they are supposed to last. Billet steel is going to wear it faster than the regrinds I sell, but you dont need bronze on regrinds.
The DOHC oil pump drive gear looks different than the gen 3 pushrod gear. It must be mellonized given no one has had one fail yet. If it wasn't, all the billet cams would have no gear left on them.
I guess this is true, but thats a lot of wear for 15k miles... its not like I had a high volume or high pressure oil pump either... thats all still stock.
Oh well I'm going stock with your re-grind so I should be all set.
I'll post pics when i get home but do you think I should do my cam bearings too??
Gotta use bronze on a billet cam. Even factory billet cams use the bronze gear. A billet cam will devour a regular dist gear. I tried a poly gear on a L98 and even though it looks and feels like a joke they are worth the money. What does the finish look like on the cam gear. Is it rough? I bought a Lunati cam once that ate 2 bronze gears in less than 30K then finally quit and still running the 3rd gear about 80k later. In comparison to a GM cam you could visually see the diffrence in gear finish. Ligenfelter offered billet cams with a ordinary gear pressed on to solve the dist gear problems but I doubt anyone offers these for the v6.
The cam looks unscathed... But since I'm going with a regrind this time I can use the stock gear, so I should be all set.
But yeah no one makes a press on gear for the billet cams, but since there are so many solid core regrinds avilable now there is no reason to use a billet one... at least I don't think there is.
...looking for a Bronze/Polymer/Mellonized distributer gear for an old Crane 260 degree @ .050 .625 lift billet roller cam...is the oil pump drive stub gear the same as a distributer gear? Are any factory gears mellonized?
