  • looking for some quick gains

i have a 98 3100 sfi with the small port intakes. now, this is my DD and i dont have more than a day of downtime available. i know this severly limits my options, but what is available to me for some quick gains. here is what i have done as of now:

    custom warm air intake/heat shield
exhaust (its just a muffler for now, but going to full 2.5" from cat back)
    descreened MAF
    plugs wires (stock original coilpacks.)

    any input appreciated.. thanks

go ahead and just get a magnaflow high flow cat, mine was only $60 and had the o2 bung already welded on

get a new MAF if your planning on having your car tuned by mark... the screen helps smooth out airflow so its more acurately read

what plugs and wires are you running?

in a day you can get a lot dont, i would suggest swapping to large port manifolds or better yet ported parts from the store, a 62mm tb (shouldn't take more than a half hour), plenum spacers, new valve springs (ours can show valve float as early as 5k rpm) and of course a tune cuz our stock shift maps suck

beyond that and you might wanna look at nitrous....

oem wires, NGK iridium plugs. im not sure if im completely capable enough to do LIM swap. for the hi flow cat, i'll just add that onto my exhaust project when i get that done mid winter around january. im looking for a 62mm TB, really want one. now would it be evn worth it to P&P my UIM for a 62mm TB and not the LIM?

edit: i dotn have a service ## on my PCM, so a tune is kinda iffy unless i buy DHP

see about getting rid of the restrictor in the downpipe, that'll gain ya a few HP easy.

Yes get new downpipe. Basically all new pipe. The downpipe (at least on my 3100) is 1.625" inside. It's double walled for quicker cat light off.

dude, changing the LIM is easy, its just nuts and bolts and a few electrical connectors, all you need is a new gasket set, fluids, a serpintine belt tool and a torque wrench, ben doesn't even offer small port manifolds... that alone should tell you something

couple things i forgot about, headers, underdrive pulley

i have a 2.5 inch stainless exhaust flex coupler, if you want it pm me

exhaust flex coupler? is that from headers to cat?

yeah, pretty much, it allows the engine to flex without cracking the exhaust, the factory one is mounted right on the flange, the one i have availible should last longer since its all stainless

My exhaust has 200k on it, and hasn't cracked... When getting exhaust done at a shop, they should be able to make a new flange and downpipe and re-use the factory spring setup right?

Yes, there is a reason I don't offer small port manifolds (though for sales alone I should do gen 2, iron head, and small port manifolds). The stock large port manifolds walk all over any porting effort you put into the small port manifolds. I would seriously consider the manifold swap. Do some reading on what it takes though. Its not that difficult to do if you have a basic tool set. Considering the plastic lower intake gaskets like to leak, it would be a good time to switch to the newer metal gaskets as well. Preventative maintenance and a performance upgrade at the same time.

well the gasket leak is what is discouraging me from doing it. i had the updated gaskets put on about oh 15k miles ago and it cost a shitton. so i am slightly reluctant to tear out all my shit to do all that. also with the swap do i have to remove my valve covers and drain the oil?

you dont have to drain the oil but its recomended to change it after the engine is back together, this allows you to "clean out" anything that might be in the engine, i like to run a quart of oil down the valley before putting the LIM back on aswell

and yes, the valve covers need to come off, those gaskets are fairly cheap though and then you could always go ahead and have another set PC'ed by mark like i believe we talked about before...

if i could make it up there and you have a place to work we could get it done in an afternoon without issue but you would prolly need to supply tools as im down to the large boxes right now
