  • Suggestions for Gen II Bracket Racing cam

As the title say, I'm looking for suggestions on what people have used for the the 2.8/3.1 that delivers good bottom end torque and still has good top-end power. I know this is odd since everyone just goes right up to a Gen III 3x00 but that isn't an option, since its bracket racing and not go as fast as possible it doesn't really matter anyway.

We already have the engine built, far beyond what will ever be pushing it to the limit for power however the cam in it is a turbo spec cam and has terrible bottom end power but really good top-end power, this just doesn't work with an automatic, unless we put a really high-stall converter like we have with it now, it gets terrible gas mileage and not very good for normal driving.

If I remember correctly the Crane 272 makes really good power on top end but the bottom end lacks a little bit, as where the 260 makes really good bottom end power and falls off a bit on top end. We can easily get a custom grind done too if needed.

    Thanks

The 260 will be fine for all mid range applications. I think you should also go with 1.6 rockers though. Get that lift as high as practical to make the torque you want. Ben may have some flow numbers for the Gen II heads. If he does ask him when the port stalls (where flow limit is reached) and go with a cam that can get the vave open to at least that lift value or slightly better. Doing this will ensure maximum torque and power will follow accordingly. The Gen II motor is not going to shine over 6000RPM with any cam unless serious port work is done. So for your mid range torque application I would go with the 260. Dont be afraid to talk to Crane and COMP tech guys for advice. I am not a big fan of the COMP single pattern design on the 660 motors. They kind of left us with limited choices. If I were to use the COMP cam I might use a 1.5/1.6 rocker combo on valves to help the exhaust side out.

Also it sounds like this is a driver car aswell so the 260 cam shines again since it will have great street manners.

thumbs up for the 260 grind. excellent mid range power and wakes up the engine on the top end from what it was. good for torque with a pretty level torque curve from 2500 rpms and up. i daily drive my car with that camshaft and its as much as i'd want if you have to drive in traffic.

the 1.6:1 ratio rockers will also help promote torque on the low end.

geoff: the crane camshaft is dual pattern but its also advanced isnt it? ahh i dont remember.

Yeah, I was kinda figuring the 260. I will message Ben.

I should mention, the engine as it is now, is FAR from stock. It does have pretty good ported heads and lower intake/gasket matched upper. It has Crower SBC Rods and JE Pistons, the heads are even O-ringed. With the current cam, when the trans actually worked right with the car it is in, it would hit 6500 no problem at all. Getting of the line is more important at this point since there won't be a Turbo to help out.

The car will be a "driver" not in the sense of daily driver, My Dad and I would switch off driving it weeks, he drives 3 miles to the bus stop and I drive, with 0 traffic on the freeway so "street" manners isn't necessarily a "big" thing. The car it is in *TGP* is about as crappy daily driver as you will find with the terrible transmission it has now.

I do have 1.6 rockers already BTW.

I will offer this information to the guy that built the motor and see if he has any suggestions as well.

I run a fed/mog cam cs192r, Don't think they make it any more but I think wolverine makes it. The specs. adv dur 288/298, dur @.050 214/224, lift .443/.465, LS112. I run 1.6 rockers which yeild .473/.497. This is in between the 260 and 272. I've pulled a 1.9 60' times with a TH125 3.06 gear,2100 stall. Still get 30 mpg. I gained .8 sec changing the exhaust from 2" full exhaust to open 2.5".
