  • obd 1 off highway performance replacement

Help, I have the 1990 3.1 v6 from a chevy lumina, I want to use it in a Baja Bug. Are there any programs or replacements for the OBD 1. I will only need the fuel, ignition, timing and advance systems to be operational for Off Highway use.

What kind of changes are you talking about needing for this application? If you use the wiring harness, ECM, engine, and transmission, you are pretty much set as it is.

I'm guessing he wants all the emission controls deleted.

That is easy enough, but I want to make sure he isn't deleting necessary equipment and is using the stock transmission with it.

          obd 1

I would like to use the stock wiring harness so i don't have to buy a new one (ripped from the lumina). I am using a non electronic vw bus trans. I just want to put the stock motor in the baja injectors and all. I will be adding headers with no smog (building them myself) maybe add a supercharger or small NOS kit later.

May have to change some lockup for the torque converter parameters. I really don't know if that is necessary though. Adding nitrous could be handled with a wet shot, and a supercharger will require a different MAP sensor and program. I don't do anything with boost on obd1.

You will need a chip burner, a flash chip, an adapter, an aldl cable, and software. moates.net has the burner and adapter for the chip and the cable. andywhittaker.com has freescan, but you will need to use 91 code and not the stock 90 code that your ecm has in it now. You will also need software for tuning. tunerpro will work. A1 is the code mask you will need to use.

I am a old school motor head, sounds like pulling the intake, ignition and fuel sys off and replacing it with a performer and carb is easier. Thanks for the info, I will try to figure what all that stuff is and decide where to go from there.

There's no carb intake available to fit your gen2 aluminum heads, unfortunately.

                      And carbs suck for offroad.

Question. Do you think that VW bus trans will hold? Sounds like risky business trying to force nearly 200LBS of torque through it and possibly some nitrous. How much stronger are the bus trannys from the cars? I have a Car tranny with a flipped diff carrier running into van axles (wheel mounted gear reduction hubs) I would never imagine trying to give it that much power.

It all depends on which bus tranny he has. I have a 3100 in my sand rail and I have destroyed a 3 rib, 4- five rib after market built trannies and I just put in a 6 rib (091) that has all after market gears and diffs. This tranny is guaranteed up to 550 hp. It wasn't cheap though.

Alot will depend on how you drive it. Off-road is tough on drive trains.

                        Good luck
