  • how much power thru a 2.8 700r4?

How much of a power increase can a stock s10 2.8 700r4 tranny take? All the combos I see posted here are making me think they are just as viable as the 305/350 swaps, but I am concerned about the original tranny now.

The 700R4 as a class of transmissions can take about as much as you are willing to throw at it.

The problem is that the 700R4 in you truck is only set up to take the force of the 2.8L
Usually the big differences between a 350 700R4 and yours is the number of clutches and the servo used in the transmission.

But there are other differences sometimes found. Like stronger bearings hardened shafts and better clutch and band materia, and stronger gears.

But your tranny should be good to about 250LBS of torque. If you notice any problems with it slipping go for a performance rebuild.

The v8 swap I was considering was for a stock 305. Sounds like the torque you mention is what I would get. The V8 requires some pounding on sheetmetal, driveshaft length change, and a radiator change. A 3.2/3.4 swap with some power options might be a lot simpler and keep a better weight dist.

V8 swaps do not require any firewall changes if done right. You cannot even use your tranny with a V8 swap so dont worry about that. Also if done right the driveshaft will not need changing

The "mod" to the firewall is actually hammering for clearance. I asked about the trans to see if I could retain the original trans for a 60 degree v6. Sorry for any confusion

No you do not need to hammer for clearance. With the right engine mounts it can be with no hammering.

Trust me, stop by s-series.org and you will find all the details.

BTY. "If done right"? I even clearanced the firewall in my Jimmy, with a 660.

Also the fact that the lip at the junction between the firewall and trans tunnel needing to be layed back would hardly be called "doing it wrong". Also the only reason that it is hemmered back is access to the upper trans to engine bolts, without doing that, you will not be able to remove or install the tranny at a later date.

I never have a problem with my bolts. And every person that has used the JTR mounts and installed the V8 right has never needed to massage the firewall. What some V8 people do to the firewall is much more than bend back the spot welded lip. They often bang a big hole in it so the distributor of a V8 will clear and so the detent cable of a TH350 will work. But it is not necessary.
