  • 2.8 lifter noise

    OK here goes.
    This is in a 1989 z24
Rebuilt the engine a about 4000 miles ago and the lifters have ticking ever since. No problems with this before rebuild.
From what I can find this appears to be a problem with the 60 degree block.
Has anyone come across a fix or tried a high volume oil pump ?
    It's really getting annoying.
    Thanks

Where did you get the lifters from? I put in a set from NAPA in my '89 Celebrity and the were noisy as hell. After 6-7K they are still a little noisy, but not as loud. The only reason I even put them in was because one was ticking on a cold start, so I figured it couldn't hurt

If the lifters Aare not NEW with everything else I'd suggest replacing them since they are cheap and in my opinion a common problem with the ole 2.8's.

have you checked to make sure all the rockers are snug? they're "non adjutable" but all the gen2 engines i've had ended up needing a few of them snugged down to stop the ticking...

I bought a crane cam and lifter kit. When those lifters didn't shut up I bought another set and those are the ones in there now.
I also have converted it to adjustable Comp magnum rockers to try and solve the problem. I have them set per the book at 1 1/2 turns tight. I have even attempted the old method of back one off until chatter and then thighten untill the chatter is gone + 1/4-1/2 turn, but the chatter never goes away.
