  • 3400 Top End Parts

I'm going over to my local yard tomorrow, hopefully I will be able to pick up the 3400 top end parts so I can do a top swap.

    List:

    - 3400 TB
    - 3400 Upper Intake Manifold
    - 3400 Lower Intake Manifold
    - 3400 Heads

I have a few questions before I grab them.

    1) Should I grab any more parts with them?

    2) Can I get the parts off a 3400 van?

    3) Anything else you may suggest?

1, grab any parts you can, incase you need anything else... such as EGR if you want to keep it. I would take anything you get off that you think you may reuse... they will change you for the big parts but since the other stuff goes with them, they shoulden't charge you much if anything for the rest of it.

2, yes you should be able to. In fact the exhaust manifolds are slightly larger on the vans, thus making a bit more power. May not be worth it though.

3, bring plenty of tools and time if you plan on pulling this stuff yourself! A good knife will save you time by cutting lines that you don't need. Also have the heads checked, try to find a car that was totaled for a side/rear crash... if nothing visual is wrong with it then it may be there due to serious engine problem. You don't want to buy very warped heads or anything, but I would have them checked at a machine shop regardless. Maybe even a valve job or more if $ permits.

Well I actually when to the junkyard today to look for some parts. I wandered around for awhile, and most of the cars they had were older cars with the 3100. I did find 3 cars (one impala and 2 vans) but 2 engines had already been pulled and the other was about 4 or 5 inches from where it should normally sit. So for right now I am SOL.

That leads me to my next questions:

      1) If I was to port the upper and lower manifolds from my 3100, would they be as good as port 3400 manis?

      2) Can I buy the top swap parts here? (Stock manis, tb, heads?)

I wouldn't bother porting your 3100 stuff. My old style 3100 vs 3500 stuff is a joke with port size comparison (huge difference), I'm sure the 3400 is not far behind.

You can get most of the stuff you need from members here in the Buy/Sell/Trade sections.

Ok so that's probably what I will do. Originally I wasn't going to do a 3500 upper intake mani, but I have started to fiddle with things on my own, so I think I can tackle that. I need to find out if I can port match them, otherwise I will get them from here.

I did find a very interesting car though, that I didn't know had a turbo. I was out looking around and saw turbo written on an engine, it was a Pontiac Sunbird with the turbo I4. I'm almost wondering if I should go back there and pull it off.

If GM put a tiny ass T25 on a 3.1 V6, I would hate to wonder what they stuck on that I4

MAP sensor bracket, Alternator brace (bar that goes from manifold bolt to forward alt bolt), EGR if yours is the different style, and for fun, grab the vacuum and breather lines.

I agree, it would take two (T25's) for you to see good results.
Twin T25's were on my friends 300ZXtt (3.0l) and worked quite nicely.

It did look like a pretty small turbo. I never knew that sunbirds came turbocharged though, so when I walked by and saw TURBO on the engine I had to stop and take a second look.

Hopefully soon I will be able to get the parts I need.
