Please tell me I'm not the only one to do something stupid.....
A few weeks ago my oil pressure gauge stopped working, I had watched it slowwly start sticking and then fail out right, or so I thought. I did take the precaution and ran a pressure test with a hand held gauge and found my pressure to be great, why wouldn't it be, I only had 9k miles on my 2004 3.4L right? Well, things change. Runnning to work in rush hour, every once in a great while I would smell burnt oil, I always thought it was Cleveland or somebody elses car, not mine, no, mine's clean, no leaks. Well, I was wrong. One day I ran to work, 50 miles one way, I get off the freeway to listening to everyone of my lifters tapping away. My shop was only a mile so I limped her there, popped the hood, checked the oil, ummm, what oil!? 4 quarts down. Oil pressure sending unit had failed and pumped out the oil. So I get a new unit, fill her back up, and I got one real nice lifter tick. I still think if it wasn't for running full synthetic valvaline oil i would have really killed the mill. Well, the tick lasted for 6000 miles, and got worse, last night it sounded really bad, bad enough, I shut her down, and towed her to the shop.
So I call the parts store, I like napa, no listing on lifters for that motor.
So I call the dealer, they ask me for the 8th vin.....
Its a 95 acheiva with a bone yard '04 alero motor, now what do I do?
No vin, bro, so how many lifter options can there be? A 3.4 is a 3.4, right? Well not according to the dealer, 6 differant lifters! So now what? BEN!!!! You all ran into this yet?
I tear her down tomorrow and see what all is gone, I hope the cam ain't wiped, if it is, well there's an excuse for a mod.
