You will see gains from the small port heads as well. I have some pics of the two side by side. I can take my fat sausage finger and touch the back of the valve through the intake port on the aluminum heads. I've been busy finishing up my turbo, so I haven't had time to start pulling the aluminum heads apart for working over.
Here you see the larger exhaust ports that are also d-shaped...
Here you see the difference in the intake ports, also take note of the canted valves that increase flow (I'll get some more closeups later)...
And here you can see that difference in chamber size and design, along with the difference in valve size (again these are 170 castings)...
Also take note of the angle of the port on the two heads, the aluminum heads are more vertical and make less of a bend than the iron heads.
