  • 90 Pontiac 6000 Problems

My wife has a 90 Pontiac 6000 with 198,000 miles in it. The car runs great. Idles smooth until it warms up, then it has a rough idle when you are stopped. Today she was coming home from work for lunch and it just stalled in an intersection, it would not start again. She pushed her vehicle to the side of the road and then it started again and she drove home fine. If the vehicle cools off it idles fine and is smooth. I have yet had it stall on me but she's reported it to me a couple times. Any ideas on this?

I'd put a fuel pressure gauge on it, then drive around and try to get it to act up while watching the fuel pressure.

Agreed. I'd say a fuel pump is weak.

Update, wife called yesterday and said it started running worse and sounded like a truck, I drove it around when she got home and indeed it ran like crap, I drive around for awhile, then when I got home I looked under the vehicle and the cat was glowing red so hopefully that was the root of my problems, I think I'll replace the O2 sensor while I'm at it, I'm suspecting that some sensor was off and it was sending too much fuel to the engine.

A glowing catalytic converter is usually a sign of a poor ignition system somewhere - usually the ICM is what causes this.

I replaced the coil packs and the plug wires and it purrs like a kitten now.
