  • Rocker Arm Adjusting HELP!! 3.4l RWD

I have adjusted the valves to ALLDATA's Specifications,Putting it on TDC(I think) Adjusting exhaust valves 1,2,3, and intake valves 1,5 and 6.One and One Half Turns. Then I rotated it 1 complete revolution. Then adjusted exhaust valves 4,5,6, and intake valves 2,3 and 4 One and one half turn. Then I rotated the engine again to see if any were loose, and there were quite a few that were loose. I dont know what the problem is, and there is no timing tab so I can put "0" at it. Last time I found TDC, I was watching the valves, and put my finger in the spark plug hole.

I have been fighting with this for like a week.

Anybody have any idea what im doing wrong.

the reason they may be loose is how you are adjusting them. the particular cylinder you are adjusting has to be at tdc. i didnt know that when i had a similar problem adjusting my crane full roller rockers but a fellow member suggested that and it worked. rotate the engine till a cylinder is at tdc, then adjust both the intake and exhaust rockers at that time (both valves should be closed) i dont know what rockers you are using but crane suggests tightening the nut until slight resistance is felt while spinning the pushrod and then turn it one half to one full turn after that then lock it down. talking to them on the phone had me adjusting them 1/8 of a turn and then locking them down. when properly adjusted they shouldnt be loose after that. i think you may be adjusted them when the lobe is starting to open or close that particular valve and it hasnt opened/closed fully.

I had number 1 at TDC, both the exhaust and the intake valve was closed. There is a mark on the harmonic balancer, where does it point?? Stock rocker arms

adjust number 1 while its at tdc and then rotate it till cylinder 2 is at tdc and then adjust it. do it one cylinder at a time. i have never seen any marks on the crank pulley but then again i have never really looked for any. ive never had to adjust stock rockers so i couldnt tell you the exact procedure but im sure many here have and will tell you

Dude do what he said. ONE CYLINDER AT A TIME. Just keep turning the motor to where it needs to be. It is the best way to be sure you adjusted them all. Also some will be loose after adjustment as the force of the springs will push out oil past the check ball in the lifter becuuse it is not a 100% seal in the lifter. So just adjust them all once cyl at a time. On stock rocker studs do 1 turn of preload.

ill give you the proceedure i use on anything from little 4cyl to 2500+hp alcohol dragsters.

do one cyl at a time. turn the motor over till the exaust valve just starts to open, then set the intake valve. then, turn the motor over till the intake valve is just starting to close, then set the exaust valve.

I got them pretty well set with 1 turn of preload. before I put the upper intake on, I will crank the engine over with the starter and build oil presure, see if they get loose again.

I just want to leech onto the bottem of this post...

I just set my rockers the same as sharkey just suggested, and i thought of something.. hydrolic lifters need to be filled with oil right? so i took it all apart and left them in a tub of oil overnight. but this got me thinking, you're always going to have a some lifters at full lift while the enigne is sitting and the oil will come out to an extent... so when u go to start the engine especially for the first time, some of your valves may not open much or at all... is this a big concern?

No thats the way they work. Valve spring pressure will force oil out when sitting. Not a big deal. The valve will still open a little. Within seconds of oil pressure building hte lifter will remove all lash from the system. Just adjust one turn on every lifter while it is on the base circle of the cam and your done. You dont need to soak them in oil overnight. You dont need to be concerned if some or loose after adjustment, several will be I can tell you that.
