  • engine cutting out at 5500 rpm with holley commander

ok, so i did my turbo project on this 3100 now it seems whenever i hit 5500 rpm the engine loses power. when i say loses power the tach drops right at 5500 for a second or so then if i let off its fine.

now this is a different problem than if it hits the rev limiter, ive set the rev limit to 4000 once just to see, when it hits the limiter the tach will stay at that rpm not fall until i let off the gas.

so i turned up the limiter to 7000, but still at 5500 it cuts out. any ideas. what should ideal plug gap be for a turbo .025 or .030 or something else?

im only running 6psi right now so i dont see the need to upgrade to better coils its just like it cuts out at 5500 and jerks for a second then i let off cause i dont want to keep doing it.

my only thoughts are possibly try a new coil OR coilpack module assembly. it will do this under load and in neutral so im stumped.

    any ideas?

p.s. its defenately not too lean or anything for fuel, as it will do it in neutral and i have lots of fuel at this point in the fuel map.

suggestions? only revving to 5500 and spooling at only 3500 is not fun, but atleast i can still put 3-4 lenghts on a srt-4 neon and stage 2 cobalt by the end of 3rd gear. so there is definately poetential here.

Needs to be gapped at least at .035 IIRC. Are you using the colder TGP plugs? They should be gapped smaller already. Don't run the 3100's stock .060 gap.

Damn I want boost. Only 5psi and my heavy chevy and I'd probably be in the 14's. Even with my old 94 3100. (soon to have large port manifolds). I have a boost gauge that goes up to 5psi too what do you know!

      EDIT TGP plugs are .045
      Seen this link? http://www.v6z24.com/jbodyforum/viewtopic.php?t=83785

Other than spark plugs would could it be? Valve float? What springs you got? Normaly I think that's not an issue until greater than 6psi, but your's could be weak?

i have the upgraded ls6 springs and a milzy stage 1 cam. it never did this before i put on the turbo.

i did however have to move the coils over slightly on the mounting plate the end set of coils where the holes are for the screws dont contact the base mounting plate anymore, however there should not be a need for the coils to "ground" to this plate, as the holes for the bolts are plastic covered and dont believe they act as a ground.

yeh, my buddy in the srt-4 ran a 13.9 at the track, and im beating him only having a turbo range of 3500-5500, and to boot it doesnt hit 6psi instantly it takes to 5500 before it even gets to 6 psi. (as in at say 4500 im only at 3-4 psi) ((wastegate and front header leak.)) cant wait to fix this then i should be looking for a 13.5 or better.

also have water injection to be put on. im hoping to play with timing, step up to around 8-9-10 psi, lean it out a little, rev to 6500-7000 and maybe even see a low 13 or crack a 12.

we will see.... but first i need help in solving this problem..

im running ngk tr6 gapped to .030 right now. i thought .045 was too much, maybe not.

ps. this is also with only 24deg of timing throughout the rpm range.

Make sure the ICM is pressed firmly down on the plate, it acts as a heatsink. If the coils are off to the side and not holding it down, then that could prove problematic.

I actually put heatsink grease (arctic alumina no doubt) on my last ICM.

yes but in this case you would think that the coils would not work till they got hot. well it does it right away not long after startup.

any other ideas? im going to try another coil pack module one day.

put your crank sensors on a wave meter, look for complete drop outs @ 5500. Ohm your coils.

              My money on weak coils.

All stock ignition? You might be experienceing spark blow out when you get full boost, since you said you don't have 6 psi till around 5500.
Accel coils or go to a crane system. Much better than MSD.

Low/No flow EGR valve, block off plate.
Carbon canister and purge valve mod, place in large 30 Gallon can, cover, and place curbside, the city will do the rest.
PCV valve and vent tube, reroute to exhaust to dump where it belongs, on the ground. Or add breathers and let it all free.

95- good points. however, it also does it when stopped and in neutral just revving the engine. when revving in neutral there is no boost, but yet it still happens.

i will try your suggestions and let u know.

                thanks all

Accel coils I've heard lots of bad things about them. Like them failing and causing lots of problems. Stockers are usualy pretty strong, turboz24 uses them with no problems.
