On the coldest day this year 25f I started up our 96 3100 and it developed a solid miss. I checked the scan code to find #6 was misfiring. I pulled #6 wire to have the end pull off. I replaced #6 wire and plug, still missing. I drove it for 2 weeks, missing on #6, telling everyone I knew that the pos engine had blown another head gasket, it has happened twice before.
I just did a complete overhaul and did it RIGHT in June 05. It had been running better than when it was new since the over haul, higher compression from block and head surfacing made a difference.
I had no coolent in oil after 2 weeks, so I took another look.
Discovered bad coil for #6. Coil was 39.99 at Autozone.

Thats wierd, I blew a head gasket and thought it was the coil pack.

even weirder is the coil packs are in pairs so i wonder how it didnt show up as 2 missing cylinders.

DIS will always fault the return fire cylinder in most cases so 3 and 6 are missing. DIS ignition has multi spark so it is possible that if one coil fails one cylinder will still receive a spark at near stiotch/compression.

You probably were missing on 2 cylinders.

The GM DIS is still only a single strike /rev.

Besides, there is such a thing as the tower of the coil being damaged/broken internal conductor.
