  • Oil in intake

    I'm finally tearing apart this '94 Lumina to check for leaking fuel injectors, and then if those are OK, replacement of the fuel pressure regulator. Upon disassembly, I found what I perceive to be excessive oil in the intake tubing, in the throttle body, and on the upper intake gaskets I replace a couple months back. I'll attach pics so you can see what I saw. Thanks.

    By the way, I never realized how difficult it was to remove that upper intake. The stuff for the EGR, stupid throttle body coolant hoses...gonna make sure it goes back together properly, though.

    Three more pics...continuation of last post. Quite simply, tell me if this is something to worry about. The car doesn't burn any oil, but what would cause this? Thanks.

      I guess I should clarify the intake manifold (upper & lower) pictures, as if it wasn't already obvious...the dark brown on the mating surfaces is oil. Not much for carbon buildup on them.

        Either a plugged PCV valve or bad blowby. I would bet on the blowby.
        If you are driving a Chevy, everything else, is just a blur. 3.4 Carbon Footprint.

          I'll replace the PCV valve while it's all apart, just because, and may clean up the intake manifold, too. When you say blowby...what are you referring to? Blowby from where? Piston rings?

            Rings. Nothing else it could be. I've seen this question asked many times, always comes out the same. PCV system is working right, it is rings. Nature of the Beast.
            If you are driving a Chevy, everything else, is just a blur. 3.4 Carbon Footprint.

              Completly agree. Check the PCV and the breather hose. Check that you have the correct PCV valve for the engine. A generic Fram or something stupid like that may be the problem.

                The PCV valve is original, or at best, 130,000 miles old. I'll get one while I have the manifold off, just because it is off, and I don't want to pull it all apart again. If it's rings, I'll just deal with it. Doesn't burn any, so I'm not TOO worried, I suppose.

                  Whoa !

                  I came through this same problem with my 3.1 . Changed PCV , cleaned all the plenum by a pro for carbon , TB , and ports , and i never saw oil again there . Condensation and carbon buildup could cause this tho but if you checked this out already then go for the pcv . They should ( normally ) get remplaced every 80000 km . So , i think its time for a new one

                  But i dont understand why you removed the entire TB to take out the plenum ... I never did that on my 3.1 . Unbolted : EGR , TB ( but just the 2 long ones , i let the two hoses there keeping the throttle body in the air ) , vacuum hose from brake booster , pcv and the 9 ( 10 ? ) on the plenum and voila ! Did it like 7 times this summer . It takes me 15 minutes now :P . with a hand ratchet ! ...


                  And for those 2 TB hoses you can simply bypass them to never had to get them off in the future . Check out this page : http://www.v6z24.com/howto/heaterbypass

                  And i would change those 2 plenum gaskets for new ones if you can pay them , of course... i think they cost 50 $ here so ...
