  • stalling and Hot restart issue

I'm working on a friend's '96 Grand Prix 3.1 trying to figure out a few issues. no CEL, SES or codes thrown as far as I can tell.

Currently the car is having issues hot restarting, very lopey idle and stalling when coming to a stop. Idle lope is bad enough that you have to left food brake and keep some throttle for it not to stall.

Plugs were changed to new Bosh Platinums, AIC was de-carboned and tested as working.

Not sure exactly where to look at this point. I did see some people mentioning low fuel pressure, but doesn't that trip a code at least?

The Bosch plugs need to come out. Get a set of AC Delcos. Bosch plugs are not compatible with our waste spark ignition system. They may work for a while, but they will live short lives before they start causing problems. That's where I would start. Hope this helps

Issue seems to be irrespective of plugs, present both before and after switching plugs, just not sure what it is. Listed the plug change to help with diagnostics

I understand that, but those plugs will give you trouble after a few thousand miles.

I don't think it's the torque converter as it drives OK. It just doesn't idle well and doesn't quite seem to have as much power anymore.

Sounds like one problem would be a vacuum leak, the other may be ICM.

fuel pressure will not trip a code... check that as well as checking for a vac leak and also have the ICM tested... best to drive it to the auto parts store to get it hot and pull it right there for testing so its nice and hot and not cold.

Data logging the ECU will also give you some real sensor info to use in diagnosing this problem... without data logging your really just guessing.

Clogged fuel filter and/or failing fuel pump are possibilities.

Testing fuel pressure at the schrader valve is a good idea.

Could you provide a little more detail of the problem and how it starts?
