  • Question : Crankshaft Balancer - Last Question?

I'm ready to install the crankshaft balancer on my 1998 Lumina 3100 and I noticed the mention of an installation tool in one of the forums. I was going to use a pulley installer that I use for PS pump pulleys. Is there a special tool for the balancer pulley or am I okay using my existing installer?

If you can get it to thread into the crank snout I don't see why you couldn't. They both work on the same principal as far as pulley installation but the major difference is the size of threads that the tool screws into.

You should use the press tool. Any tool with the correct threads will work. Some people do get away with a dead blow hammer but there is a risk of damaging the thrust bearing if it is a tight fit.

Go to Autozone and get the proper tool which will make the job go much easier and safer. They charge a deposit that is fully refunded when you return the tool. This is the kit I used and it worked flawlessly. Put a little oil on the crank snout to help the pulley slide better and grease the threads of the tool to help prevent stripping them out.
