  • Question : 3100 Damper?

I have a 1998 Lumina with a 3100. As I was starting to look at the A/C, I noticed that the serpentine belt was tracking off of the tensioner by about 1/8" and the alternator looks good, but the damper (crankshaft balancer) seems to have a wobble in it. I had the gasket behind the timing chain replaced last september and I assume they took the damper off to do so. Is this a loose damper? I understand that they are on fairly tight generally speaking. Could the damper have gone bad? They sell them at parts stores and although it looks like a simple pulley; they most likely do balance the crankshaft on that end. Is this easy to do? Do sleeve kits work? Any help would be appreciated.

It's possible the pulley is bad. If new replacements are cheap I would throw a new one on. If you got a new one you wouldn't need a sleeve kit. Sleeve kids have a thin ring of metal that slide over the pulley end that goes over the crank to cover the groove worn into the pulley from the pulley seal. If the pulley is sucked down all the way like it should be but wobbles, it's shot for sure and needs replaced.
