  • Question : 93 3.1 Fuel Rail Fuel Regulator Problems

Alright so I picked up a 93 Grand Prix to be a cheap run around car but it's been plagued with cold starting problems, so I tracked the problem down to the fuel regulator. Today it was warm up here (40 degrees is warm now in ND) and I went to tackle it, busted knuckles I got it all back together or so I thought, fuel started spraying out from in between one of the connections between the fuel rail and fuel regulator.

I lubed up all the o-rings, and I had to use a clamp to squeeze the rails and regulator back together.

Anyone got any tips for doing this job again to make sure I got it right before I put the intake plenum and everything back on and get leaks again?

If so much pressure was necessary to re-connect the fuel rail sub-components, there is a good chance that you either pinched, nicked, ripped or tore one or more of the "O"-Rings in this assembly. Kinked or bent metal piping and mating surfaces turned "out-of-round" can occur when excessive or unnecessary force is applied during re-assembly and might also be the culprit here. Using the attached image...can you precisely refer to the place(s) where you think the fuel is leaking out? This is job to do when the vehicle is pushed OUT of the garage and into the yard ...a bit further away from the house. If you do not have a decent sized ABC Fire Extinguisher and a 5 Gallon Bucket filled with wet rags handy while running and testing an engine in this condition... now would be a good time to find and keep these items handy.
