  • 3400 cam in 3100 motor

Now, i'm not 100% sure what era of the 3100's had the bad cam/cam bearings, but i know that they were pron to snap in the middle, i'm doing a conversion and lower intake gaskets on a small port 3100, and i have my very good cam from my '05 3400 motor collecting dust, is it worth it to just throw it in? this area falls grey to me. To my knownledge and what i can find the cams are the same grind. But if my 3400 cam is a bit bigger its gonna get thrown in anyways for shits n giggles, its nothing performance but i got some stock parts laying around so it wouldnt hurt.

Also i would like to clarify that the small port 3100 (96-98/99) were the smaller ports on the heads lower intake and upper correct? or was it just the lower intake and upper?

    Thanks all!
    Bob

The cams are identical. As far as port size, it typically describes the intake manifold, but the newer heads do have improved port designs.

To expand on what Brad said, 3500 cams are the same as well. The cam position sensor trigger looks different, but it will run identical as it did with the 3100 or 3400 cam if you put a 3500 cam in a 3100/3400. The van I had to drop a low mileage 3500 cam into is still running problem free 2 years and who knows how many miles later as the guy used to use it to scope out his repos with. The only thing I've had to do on it the last two times it's been here was fix a couple popped brake lines.
