  • 2.8l tbi problems

I got a 88 s10 2.8l tbi , bought it from a friend ran good when he had it. I drove it around for a while and was getting harder and harder to start and would idle at like 3k. few weeks later fuel pump died, replaced pump and tank; as the whole top of the tank was roted through. Now starts up and idles great until it warmed up sometimes it will stall out when you stop but most of the time its fine just a little on the low side.

Now the problem I'm having is when driving in 4th and mostly 5th if you go WOT it will stutter and start loosing speed even on flat ground has no power at all, when going up the smallest hill have to go to 4th and 3rd. Not as noticeable in 1st and 2nd because of torque takes over there. When at WOT and loosing speed if you let off the gas like 1/4 to 1/2 inch it will start picking up speed somewhat but not as much as it should. Also it revs nice and smooth in neutral. Another thing is before I replaced the engine coolant temp sensor it would blow black smoke out the exhaust and was running extremely rich but replaced it with a new one and its better but for some reason it still runs a lot better with it unplugged and when the check engine light comes on. But it will not come on or give any codes with it plugged in and running like crap. Had a toyota with the 3.slow in it with 32s and it would eat this s10 alive atm.

For what has been replaced, new cap, rotor, plugs, wires, fuel pump, strainer, fuel tank, TPS, fuel filter, the ignition control module in the distributor (replaced that due to no spark before fuel pump issue).

Sorry for such the long post but wanted to give as much detailed information to help solve this problem as it is getting quite annoying. Any help is greatly apriciated.

Forgot to mention the check gauges light is on for some reason? All the gauges read fine, oil gauge used to read max all the time but found out the wire was just unplugged.

Your best bet will be to read the ECM while driving. A free copy of Win ALDL and a cable from OBDcables.com will be the cheapest route.

The biggest thing that jumps out is still the ECT sensor. Even though you replaced it. Check it with a multimeter. It should read 3400 ohms at 21*C (70*F) if it doesn't get another one. Try and get an AC Delco one.
