  • Whats everyone paying for machine work?

Well I'm having troubles getting ahold of shop that i have chosen to do my machine work, mostly because there so busy, so i'd like to ask all you guys what your paying, and what I or anyone else for that matter should expect to pay for basic machine work to there block. This will be a good refference for everyone else who might be deciding to rebuild a 60*v6 on this forum, and will need to budget there build
Excluding special costs (through your work, or your buddys shop) Whats everyone paying for:
    • Cylinder boring/hone/scuff
    • Sizing rings
    • Line boring main caps
    • Honing rods
    • Installing Cam Bearings
    • Polishing crank
    • Turning down a crank
    • Decking block
    • Planing heads

I normally pay $60 or $80 (forgot which) for a set of v6 heads to be cleaned, pressure checked and decked if need be. I think it was $60 for an I4 and $80 for a pair of v6 heads though. And I believe it was $20 a hole for boring/honing, and $20 for cam bearing install. This was by a really good old time gear head, but he's moved to South Bend and I don't want to drive a half hour one way when I found another guy a mechanic (for a living) friend uses and really recommended. I believe the new guy charged $60 for an I4 head to be cleaned, pressure checked and decked. I'll be visiting the new guy again this summer.

This is an excerpt I received on a RFQ to Godwin Singer down in St. Petersburg, Florida on essentially all the major engine component work and block machining for 1995 3.4L L-32 207 CID motor. Please note that this quote is dated back to the year 2008, so adjustments in similar machine shop work might have occurred since then:

Robert, Thank you for your inquiry. First off, if you are purchasing these parts off the internet, I most likely can not better their prices. If you get me prices on everything you want, I can see what I can do. I can give you an estimate on the machine work you requested. Everything that you asked about involves the short block only. What about the heads?

      1. Cleaning the block $68.00
      2. Checking the block for cracks 18.00
      3. Correction Hone block $48 If the block needs to be bored for oversize Pistons, $120.
      4. Cam Journals Have you spun a bearing? If cam journal line bore or line hone, hourly rate.
      5. Main Journals If line bore or hone is necessary, $155.
      6. Crankshaft Polish $28 Grind $118. If you have thrown a rod, it may have to be straightened, which is an extra $10.
      7. Recondition rods if necessary. $12. each may just need to be checked and trued.
      8. R&R pistons $9 each.
      9. Install freeze plugs $14 cam bearing installation? $26.
      10. Installing speedi-sleeve on crank rear main $12 same on front does not include cost of sleeves.
      11. Block resurface? $77.
      12. When all machine work is complete, the block and other machined parts are clean.
If you want the short block assembled, it would be about $175.00.

All of these prices are labour only, no parts involved.
