  • Question : Spark Plug replacement on an 89 Grand Prix

Anyone know how to do it on the motor, it seems impossible to do with an every day guys tools? Where's the coil packs? Anywhere know where to take it that it won't cost $255.88, like Pepboys said it would take? Thanks in advance.

if by that you mean you can reach the front plugs, but not the back, then thats about how its supposed to be. to get at the back plugs easier, you have to disconnect the dogbones, then ratchet-strap it forward, or park on a hill with the front of the vehicle pointing downward. that'll make removing the dogbones a little harder, but if you don't have a ratchet-strap, its about their only option.

i believe its a 15 and 13mm bolt and nut for the dogbones(did it about a month ago).

after the motor is forward, it gets MUCH easier to get at the back plugs, even the O2 sensor is easy at that point.

coils should be on the front of the motor, a little underneath the spark plugs, pretty close to the oil filter. i believe the bracket holding them on has 8mm bolts...

Wow, I didn't even think of that, that would make it a lot easier for the back, Thanks, hopefully I can try this soon.

If you have to take it somewhere try the dealer.

You may be surprised how reasonable they can be on some services. Especially stuff like this they do everyday.

Having said that when my Beretta still had the 3.1 I never had much problem getting the plugs out of the back without moving the engine.

It's the top mounted coils on the 3x00 series engine that become a PITA! But I can still get the plugs without moving the engine.

Plug socket, universal joint and an extension on the rachet always worked for me.

And DON'T forget the Anti-Seize when installing the new plugs. Not too much, but it certainly helps next time.
