i got a question about my trans. 89 gp is the car. from sitting still if i stomp on the gas(mostly on accident like when i go to adjust as i accelerate lol) it sounds like the gears are slipping and everything shakes very violently, then it pulls itself outta gear until the rpms come back down. then it goes back into gear. im guessing/hoping this was how its supposed to be, like its not supposed to take that kinda beating and for a safety thing so the gears dont get stripped. is this normal, im hoping, figured one the experts here could tell me. thanks!

Have you checked your tranny fluid level/color lately? I'd start there, as there is no safety feature like the one you are describing...-Brad-

ok so the trans fluid was all bad so i changed it all. new gasket, new filter, and 6 quarts of new fluid. it still does it but now even at 35 if i step on it and it down shifts and does that violent shake. never did dthat before. also from a stop its more sensitive and it doesnt take very much for it to slip or whatever its doing. ive checked the level every once in a while to make sure and its always good, no leaks.

...thats exactly what i need to hear. just broke a brake line today doing exhaust. now the trans might be going. idk about that though...i checked again and it was low. theres no leak, im just stupid and checked it while it wasnt running the first time. thats why it read alright. theres only 93000 miles...only lol

Miles isn't necessarily an indicator of wear on a 21-year-old car. I know because I just had to put a transmission in my 89 Celebrity, likely the very same one your Grand Prix has, and I've got 109k miles.

Yeah, my trans has had 220,000+ miles of hard work, and just now seems like it might be getting "unstable"...
But from what you describe it doesn't sound good at all. Have you tried unplugging the TCC to see if it that helps?sigpic New 2010 project (click image)
