  • Can anybody help pls? I want make the Headgasket..

    Hi,

I want to change the Headgasket cos I have a lot of water in my enginge, and when I refill it goes direct in the engine.

But I cant reach the screws for the Exhaust on the Engine, in front is no place to reach the screws and on backside I didnt reach the screws too, cos I didnt see anythink.

    Lumina APV 90's 3.1L
    Best regards McLin.

This is in the wrong section, but until they can move it, I will try to help some.

First of all, this site is split into 2 main category of engines. PUSHROD (2.8/3.1/3100/3400/3500/3900), and OVERHEAD CAM (3.4 DOHC. 3.6 DOHC). Your engine is a PUSHROD, so for future refrence, posting in the pushrod sections will get you better results.

A friend of mine said it is easier to get the exhaust manifolds off by going UNDER the vehicle to get them. Especially for the rear one. I find it easier in the minivans to just remove as much from the top as you can, and then worry about the exhaust manifolds when they are the last thing you have to remove before the heads come off. When you have the intake off, you have more room to get under the cowl and get to them.

I usually just get them from the top, and then get under the vehicle to get the bottom ones.

Unbolt the crossover, unbolt the downpipe, and then remove the head with the exhaust manifold still installed.

Yeah, you can remove the heads with the exhaust manifolds still installed. They're the last thing to worry about. Make sure the top end is all off, cross overs, and the down pipe. But not to break your spirit or anything, if you have a lot of coolant in your crank case, chances are your engine wont last much longer because it tears up the crankshaft bearings...

if you leave the exhaust manifold on the head, when you get the head out of the car, you can then easily remove the exhaust manifold, and install the new gasket.

I even leave the exhaust manifolds on the heads when I pull the heads off of my 3100. It just saves some time.

You have to undo the exhaust downpipe from under the vehicle, and then remove the exhaust crossover from the engine compartment.

When you do it that way, the head and exhaust manifolds will come out easily and you can do the exhaust manifold gaskets while the heads are on the table.
