  • Solve the Mystery: Leftover pieces after rebuild

    I hate it when this happens, but it was bound to happen. I took the top of the engine apart almost a year ago, and now I can't remember where these things go;

First up is this mystery tube:

It's been sitting at the hood hinge since last fall, and one end got a little crushed. I can probably save it, but I can't figure out where it goes!

    Second is these two plugs:

There were two of those red plugs, both identical. I figured out where one of them goes, but I can't see where this second one should go. As for the blue plug, I have no idea whatsoever.

I've also circled what looks like a vacuum port on the intake (green circle). I *think* the mystery tube might go there, but I'm not sure... and if so, I still can't figure out where the other end of the tube goes.

    Finally, there's this plug:

It's right next to the IAT sensor plug. I have no clue where it's supposed to go.

Any help with these items would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking forward to starting the car for the first time since the head gaskets blew last year.

The first pic is the crankcase breather tube. It goes from the rear valve cover to the intake tubing. If the tube is broken you can just cut the ends off leaving ~3/4" of tube on each end and use 1/2" hose to join them.

First up is this mystery tube:

That tube goes from the intake airduct to the REAR valve cover. There is a small hole on the REAR valve cover under the DIS. It goes in there.

      Second is these two plugs:

The small plug is either for the DIS, or the secondary canister purge. The RED connector, I think that is for an option you do not have. That is for the VARIABLE ASSIST POWER STEERING PUMP.

I've also circled what looks like a vacuum port on the intake (green circle). I *think* the mystery tube might go there, but I'm not sure... and if so, I still can't figure out where the other end of the tube goes.

That big vacuum port is for your BRAKE BOOSTER.

      Finally, there's this plug:

That connector is just the TEST LEAD for the fuel pump. It is used to either PRIME THE FUEL RAIL, or to run test on the fuel pump if you think your pump is bad. If you connect it to BATTERY POWER, then you will hear the fuel pump turn on. It is suppose to be unplugged.

Can't help with the plugs without taking my car apart. Here's a pic of where the "Mystery Tube" goes. Taylor is right about the "test lead". As far as the plugs near the coils, might want to remove the whole bracket and carefully check for places where the plugs may go. Might be easier to remove it to connect that breather tube anyway.
          Hope this helps a bit,,,,

By the time I got the upload to work you got your answers....... Oh well, I tried!!!!

The blue plug on the backside of the intake manifold is for the 02 sensor that goes in the back header.

The blue connector can't be for the O2 sensor. The HEATED O2 sensor is 4 wires, and the NON-heated O2 sensor is only 1 wire. The sensor in his picture is only 2 wires.

The only 2 wire sensors I can think back there are for the DIS (which has 2 2-wire connectors, but 1 of them is a 3 wire, but the middle one is blank so it is 1 blank 3 but still only 2 wires). the other 2 wire sensors are the canister purge, which is a RED connector just like the one for the variable assist power steering pump, and the last one I can think of back there is the DUAL canister purge, but I don't think they started the dual canister purge until 1996.

The O2 sensor is a FLAT 4 wire plug, or a SQUARE 4 wire plug (I think the SQUARE 4 wire is for the one AFTER the cat converter).

I've looked everywhere and there's nowhere to connect that blue 2-pin plug. I'll assume it was never plugged in to begin with. When I finally start the engine, I'll check for any DTCs that come up. All the other suggestions were spot-on, so everything is hooked up now. I'm just waiting on the oil to try starting it.

Does your DIS have 3 connectors plugged into it right now? The DIS will have 2 connectors on one side, and 1 connector on the other side.

What colour is the wires of the 2 wire blue connector.

deleted post. I was going to ask if it was a 1996 you were working on, but I can now see that it is either a 1994 or 1995, and a w-body.

Ah-hah! That did it. My 1999 Grand Prix factory service manual only shows 2 connectors going into the DIS, but my vehicle is a 1995 Cutlass Supreme. I had to look real close to find the third plug.

That's everything! I'm still waiting for my new spark plug wires to arrive before I can start the engine. The old ones are shot.

                      Thanks for all the help!

That came in real handy for emptying the tank of the year-old fuel without needing to remove the pump I wanted to change the fuel filter anyways before starting the engine for the first time.
